Hey all this is my 3rd section I will be studying for while awaiting my AUD results. What are some things about BEC I should know that you wish you knew when you started studying for this section. I am using Becker if that helps.

    FAR - 79!
    AUD - 79!
    BEC - 5/30/12
    REG - ?

Well… I would say to you. Really REALLY know your COSO and IT very well. The rest is just number you can practice on… I am retaking it the 30th. So lets see how it goes.

    B - 62, 70, 72, 79!!!
    A - 68, 81
    R - 70, 82
    F - 84

Just like with any other tests… do not pay attention to the breakdowns of sections on the test. It is not fully accurate. If you don't understand a topic, move on and don't spin your wheels.

As for BEC, don't worry about the writing portion if you know how to b.s. haha.

I haven't taken the test yet, but my advice to you is don't get overwhelmed. Maybe this doesn't apply to you so much as it did to me, considering this is my first test, but when I started studying, I was so confused. COSO especially. I'd never even heard of that before. I was doing pretty bad on the MCQs, but I just kept hammering away at them, and made sure I allotted myself enough time to understand the stuff before I moved on to the next topic. I feel like BEC is so hard because none of the information flows together. Review as you go, definitely!

    BEC: (4/2012) 88
    AUD: (5/2012) 91
    REG: (8/2012) 82
    FAR: (1/2013) 78 🙂

@jokami thanks for the heads up with that! Good luck on your exam

    @SoCalCPA
haha thanks for that. so I shouldn't pay too much attention to the ancillary materials besides just “reading it over once”?

    FAR - 79!
    AUD - 79!
    BEC - 5/30/12
    REG - ?

Because you are taking BEC at the end of next month, I think you should put good effort into all the subjects. However, I'm sure certain sections will be tougher than the others. So, what I'm trying to say is that it's better to master 80% of the subject, rather than being mediocre on all the subjects. That mindset has gotten me through FAR in 2 weeks and REG in 10 days. Good luck!

“That mindset has gotten me through FAR in 2 weeks and REG in 10 days.” That is insane….

SoCalCPA – are you saying that you only studied for FAR for 2 weeks?? I just got my review materials in the mail yesterday (Yaeger/Wiley) and am overwhelmed just looking at the size of the book! Advice for FAR, please? (and keep in mind that I've been out of college for, uh, more years than I'd like to admit).

    REG 11/28/11 - 88
    BEC 04/04/12 - 88
    FAR 07/23/12 - 90
    AUD 11/2012 - 92

@StellaFL If you haven't made notecards, make notecards. A lot of FAR is memorizing all of the concepts, terms, journal entries. The point of memorizing is to understand how everything fits together. FAR is one big picture and once you see the big picture you should be golden for most of the questions. However, it does take some time to understand how all of the pieces fit together. FAR was a beast and I can say if I didn't have notecards where I constantly refreshed my brain of the concepts I would not have passed. Also, not-for-profit and governmental accounting seem to always be tested on heavily as it was in my test so focus on that stuff too like knowing different funds and how they work/methods of accounting they use( I know that most likely doesn't mean much now but it will). Oh and practice simulations before you take the test! That is one thing I didn't do much of and wish I did a bit more.

    FAR - 79!
    AUD - 79!
    BEC - 5/30/12
    REG - ?

@Stella, sorry for getting back to you so late, it's hard to see who responded back to me at times haha.

I think with FAR, it's even more important to keep moving along when you feel “stuck” on a particular section. Given the volume of the material, it is imperative that you move along when you are going through it the first time. When you are reviewing all the sections, then you can go through it in more detail if you are struggling with the topic. Good luck!
