I just thought of something that made variances click for me, no matter the type. AAA SSS

And memorizing this has been a pain in the A** in the past for me, so now I will definitely remember it.

To remember whether to use standard or actual for price and usage variances keep AAA SSS in mind

For example a materials variance:

Actual Qty x Actual Price____________ Actual Qty x Standard Price_____________Standard Qty x Standard Price

This is my chosen method! None of that sad dad BS Becker has. For example price material variance I knew it was the first two of the three. I would always write AxA, AxS, and then simply, A(A-S). Learned this Junior year of college (2011) and haven't forgotten it since! Also who doesn't remember a nice A** haha
