A good way to learn these horrible variances….

My BEC exam is fast approaching and I can NOT nail down overhead variances. This whole “1, 2, 3” or “ABA BSA” thing doesn’t work for me. Even Roger’s “SEV” doesn’t work. Does anyone have a practical, common sense way to know these things?!

    Thanks.

    FAR 07/27/11 - 87
    AUD 10/01/11 - 85
    BEC 11/15/11 - 87
    REG 01/03/12 - 92

Try to go back and understand what the variances are for, rather than just memorizing them. It is really foreign if you try to just memorize the formulas and variances.

AUD: PASSED [81]; Expired, retaking August 23rd
BEC: PASSED [83]; Expired, retaking July 11th
    REG: PASSED [83]
FAR: FAILED [64]; Retaking May 23rd

@soonerorlater- I noticed your score increases from taking the exams your second time around. Can you please share some advice?? (especially for FAR). Thanks

    @AI89

In the beginning, I put in tons of time studying the way I “thought I should be”…this means watching the lectures too much, not writing notes, and doing MCS.

I found this site and researched more efficient ways to study…this means watching the lectures only once (I didn't watch them at all if I failed the section and reveiwed again), taking notes, MCQ, and rewriting notes. Basically used the Ninja FREE planner to give my studying more structure.

I would plan what I wanted to get accomplished each week (actually I had to adjust frequently). I would go through the Becker book section reading and writing notes, then after the section was complete I would go trhough the MCQ for that section. I repeated this through the entire Becker section. Then I would rewrite my existing notes, which helped me thoroughly understand the material by interpreting my notes and at times “ah-ha moments.” After rewriting, I took the MCQ for that section. When all said and done, I would randomly go over various sections (in no particular order) of MCQ for the final review. I did not put much stock in SIMS, but I did complete them when I needed to “break the norm.” I would also go over flashcards when I needed to “break the norm.”

Changing up my routine helped my score jump…Good luck!

    AUD - 63, 76
    BEC - 70, 83
    REG - 72, 79

I recommend the principles of accounting site. They seem to have a decent OH variance explanation.
