What else can I say? I sat down to take BEC today for the second time and I can’t believe how hard it is. Maybe not hard actually… but insane!!! It is insane to require me to memorize so much information, and then to test me on NONE OF IT!

So much information I memorized, made myself memorize every formula, know every single which way you can compute break even point, know about budgets and blah blah blah.. and then the test comes and FML.

I now believe I over studied, because when I sat down to take the test my mind was running with formulas and break even point and contribution margin and then I went blank. Question 1 tripped me up, and it was all shit from there. So I feel like sh*t.

I left myself exactly 27 minutes for the WC which I dunno how much you are supposed to write.

Each test-let either got harder or I become more and more stupid (which is a HUGE possibility trust me), and then I flagged like 10 on everyone.

    FML.

Whoever thinks BEC is easy is my enemy. 🙁

I am so miserable, this test is killing any happiness I have left.

Anyone feel like this and pass lol?

I got 66 BEC first try. It sucks. Its my first cpa exam too. I thought it was going to be easy. Used Wiley CPA. I studied using lecture vids + some past exam qs. Didn't study for the 15% write up at the end of the test. I went thru the test and felt it was OK. I thought I passed tbh. I was disappointed. I moved on to REG. REG is boring. Hard to study for. BEC was easier to study for but I can see that its an underestimated section. The hard part about BEC was the math ones. As someone here mentioned, the problem solving is ridiculous. I did some practice MCQs for the financial part and it was heavy. ALOT of formulas. Whatever. Gotta do it again. I think I'm feelin' quite lazy to reschedule my other sections so I'll probably take BEC after REG and FAR (hoping to pass these).

@NeedsA75 with FAR it was a combo of not being as prepared as I should have been, blanking on MCQ's and SIMS that I didn't even understand what they were asking. I honestly just did not know my stuff well enough to sit and am pretty shocked I even got a 61.

My BEC retake was actually so comical that as I said in one of my above post I just started laughing halfway through the first testlet… the first seven questions were all on the same topic which I had studied extensively however what they were asking and how they were asking it were not covered in any of the materials I studied- I even checked when I got home on three questions that I vividly remember just to make sure I wasn't going insane. The rest of the exam pretty much followed the same format. 32% of my test was on this one topic that I was just not capable of answering with any assurance. (and yes I am such a geek that after having 7 in a row on one topic I kept a running total of the questions being asked and did the percentage at the end 8,8 and 7 on the three testlets) plus 2 WC's were on the topic.

It was honestly like that dream you have where you show up for the final exam and realize you haven't been to class all semester…. Unless half of these questions were pre-test questions or I guessed very lucky (which I never do)- I knew halfway through the second testlet that I had failed.

@mckan514w thanks, that's a much more helpful response than what you normally read. I noticed a similar trend on my exam yesterday that certain topics were tested (that I knew and studied extensively) but with an added wrinkle as to make it different than any other variation of the question I've ever seen. It really annoys me that they do this instead of testing based on how the review material and practice MC teaches you.

I too checked the my review material when I got home only to find that some questions I encountered were not mentioned in the Becker material or were literally discussed in one sentence.

How did you compare the MC between your retake and your first test? Do you think you will score higher than your original exam? I just can't over how much more difficult the MC was on my retake. I can't stomach another near passing grade..

Honey, I feel your pain. I sat for BEC last Saturday for the 5th time and the test I took was way harder than any other BEC test I've taken. I've been around the BEC block, I know a f'ed up BEC test when I see it. All the other ones I walked out of feeling okay about it, the one I would have sworn up down and sideways that I passed, I got a 71 (2nd attempt) and had an epic crying meltdown at work. My test last weekend was insanely hard no amount of more studying would have prepared me for it. During the third testlet I legit wanted to go to the bathroom and cry. I was trending 86%, average 77% almost 3k questions completed every single MCQ attempted in Ninja. If I didn't pass (knock on wood I did pass) this time I have 1 more shot before my REG credit expires and I'm having a baby in May so I seriously can't let my credits start to expire or I'm… I don't even want to think about it… I really hope we all passed!! Good luck!!

Some of the stories I'm hearing from people taking exams in Q4 make me wonder if they are experimenting with the exam for the coming changes in 2017…

@NeedsA75 I was actually STUNNED that I failed BEC the first time… I mean shocked… and angry. I thought the exam I had first go round was VERY fair… covered all topics and aside from a few out of left field type things that I think you see on every exam I walked out feeling like I had done enough to get a pass. This second go round was a totally and completely different exam… that I actually did not feel was fair and am actually anticipating a score somewhere in the 60's… TBH I can live with it too because I know in my heart of hearts there was absolutely NOTHING I could have done differently to prepare myself for the exam I actually got.

that's some BS….I feel pretty much the same way about my REG retake. First time felt very fair on the MC. This second one seemed totally different and unpredictable.

There's absolutely no reason for them to make one iteration of the exam that much harder than a prior version. I knew way more on my retake than I did on my initial attempt and left feeling even more defeated in regard to the MC.

Again, I don't know if this is just luck of the draw in terms of what was tested. Maybe the first time I was more comfortable with what they tested than the second time? I have my doubts because I lot of the stuff I was seeing the second time was random minutia that I would never have thought to memorize no matter how much I studied. By and large this wasn't the case the first time I took REG.

I think with me- it was / is just the unfairness that gets me- I was pretty prepared for my first take but I will say I was beyond prepared for my second… and then I get the exam and bam its like a kick to the face. I felt like my first exam was extremely fair and fell right in line with the AICPA content guideline percentages. This second one was so heavily weighted towards one particular topic that at least according to guidelines is only suppose to account for 12-19% of the exam. I actually wanted to punch someone it made me so angry. Fine make it hard as F_CK but honestly don't lie to me about the content and what is and isn't going to be on there 🙂 sorry I digress 🙂

Yea I couldn't agree more. My exam felt weighted more heavily towards one or two topics as well. I also felt extremely prepared going in so I'm definitely upset about how things went this time.

But who knows, we could have both passed so lets not count our chickens yet.

I was right, I am stupid. I got a 70 in BEC second attempt… So my feelings were spot on. Since I can't count on my brain at least I can count on my feelings.

Honestly shut, I was reading what you posted last night and I felt so bad for you. 70 sucks, and it sucks even more because it is my second time (not to be an ass but I usually don't fail something twice.. the first fail motivates me to kick ass- this makes me miserable!!), but with that I would NEVER want to see a 74, at any point during this process.. It would make me very VERY angry.

So seriously I'm sorry about that, because I replayed in my head “what if I just answered 3 hard mcq differently..” yours is a matter of what if you just changed one stupid cell in a simulation or just ONE hard mcq .. THAT IS ANNOYING!!!!!!

@CharleneR, annoying is 71, 72, and 73 in BEC. Looks like I have to take it two more times 🙁

    REG - 55 (2/16) 69 (5/16) Retake(8/16)

@charlene and @shut Been there right with you guys. One thing you guys have to lean on is you've passed so you know you are capable of doing it again! You know what it takes. I have taken 7 exams and passed 3 so failure is all too common for me. @charlene you are 1 pass away from forgetting about all this and the finish line being in site. @shut you are obviously just 1 test away from reaching your goal. It's right there– you guys are so close. I know this will only be so helpful because I have been in your position tons of times and the “pick me up” speeches can only help so much. Good luck in the future and I'll be pulling for you both. Stay focused and push even harder!
