Has anyone failed beyond belief and then passed on retake? I failed BEC in Aug pretty badly due to multiple reasons and I feel really confident in the material now but just wondering if even you know the information can you still pass after getting a low score?

I have experince with this as you can see in my signature. Lol I have learned to not let my feelings get in my head too much. I have had personal things that helped explain some scores, but I also had a couple of shockers.

My advice- try not to worry too much and make assumptions until you get a score. Then make a plan and move forward.
    Good luck! 😉

All parts of the exam are difficult in their own right. The pass rates are around 50% for first time takers for each part, so don't beat yourself up too much because you're in good company. The CPA exam in its entirety is a marathon not a sprint.

Consider this failure as a learning experience. You know how the test runs now and should be able to improve with further study and commitment.

I found BEC very challenging. I focused more are getting through the MC questions as quickly as possible so that I would have ample time for the writing sections.

Just tell yourself there's no turning back, no quitting. You'll make it through this!

It’s totally possible! Just depends on how much effort you put into it.

I didn’t put a whole lot of effort in the first time I took BEC. I had the mindset that I’ve heard how easy of an exam it was. Got a 57. Crap. I had all those usual thoughts – am I cut out to be in accounting? Should I just give up now? Look at all the money I wasted! UGH!!!

Then I sat down and restudied everything. I walked out thinking that it went “okay I guess”. I knew right then and there that I probably didn’t pass. Got a 68.

Again, wallowed in self-pity for the next few days. Finally, I decided I’ve had enough of this crap. Third time I took BEC I got a 78. Boom! Passed! If you look at my scores, I had an 11 point jump, and then another 10 point jump. It’s totally do-able. Just need to give it your all.

“No one ever fails the CPA exam, there are only those who give up” – saw this on a thread one time and it’s stuck with me ever since. Keep pushing!

@Meg267 what did you do differently to get over the hump w/ BEC?

    AUD - 1st - 60 (12/12), 61 (2/13), 61 (8/13), 78! (11/15)
    REG - 55 (2/16) 69 (5/16) Retake(8/16)
    BEC - 71(5/16) Retake (9/16)
    FAR - (8/16)

    @stilgoin, thanks! 🙂 I love it too!

, the first test I just didn’t take as seriously. So the second time around, I re-studied everything. Videos, textbook, MCQ. I scored strongly on the writing each time, so I didn’t worry at all about that part to be honest. Figured it was better to know the material, because that would help me in the writing section as well. The second time I didn’t pass, I AGAIN went through everything. Then I finally broke down and got Ninja MCQ and pounded questions for about 8 to 10 days before my exam. To be honest, I really think that’s what pushed me over the edge.

I used Wiley for my study materials. Works better for me since the lessons are bite size, since I work full time. Plus, I don’t have the attention span to sit and watch a 1-2 hour lecture. Used Ninja MCQ to make sure I fully understood the concepts. I decided to re-study everything because who knows what type of questions I’ll get on the exam. The exams change each time. I wanted to make sure I got a better understanding of as much material as I could.

I’m using the same concept for REG, so we’ll see how that works in November :)

@Meg267 I took the exam 8 years ago and didn't pass any part and gave up, now that I am back at it that 8 years ago is looming over my head. if I just would have failed in Aug and it was my first time ever I probably wouldn't have been bummed as I was. I did NINJA for my Aug test date and found I was just memorizing the answers, I switched to Wiley for this attempt and I changed my focus to reading the explanation of each answer and learning from it. I am also making a list of “vocab words” and focusing on those. It seems you have the same plan of attack that I do, passing a section before you move on to the next.

I was memorizing the answers with Wiley, that’s why I added the Ninja MCQ for $47. Just to have something different. I think it helps having different styles of questions. I do write notes when I study. I think the muscle memory trick really does work. Yes, I plan on passing one section at a time and going from there. My test date for REG is 11/28. I’ll know my score on 12/8. That gives me about 10 days to relax and take a much needed break.

I don’t think you should even consider what happened 8 years ago. The tests have changed, the material has changed, even you have changed. Only focus on what’s happening now. We can do it together :)

I am hoping to get AUD in before the end of the year or first of Jan. I won't be able to start studying again until after tax season. My husband tells me that those attempts 8 years ago don't count and I need to start believing that. You're right we will do it together!!!!!!!!!
