Hello prospective students and magnificent moderators who make sure nobody gives away too much intel in these forums,
Here is a list of takeaways from my BEC experience. I would make this a true bulleted list (which you must never do on the WC portion of the BEC) but I’ve forgotten everything that MySpace taught me about HTML:
-Yes, you need to know COSO and IT. I definitely spent way more time on things that were either not on the exam at all, or were there for one question. Why don’t we take all the time we spend on that stuff, and give it to studying the COSO framework and IT?
-The Ninja practice questions are a fantastic resource (no I was not paid to say this). I’m a huge fan of the value of multiple choice questions and knowing why an answer is right or wrong, and in a unique way, the knowledge gained from the wrong answers on MCQ’s comes in handy here. I did about half of the 1K available and wish I did all twice but dang the cost/benefit there is questionable. I don’t think there’s a real value to getting to a “target trending score” but have some awareness of those areas where you may look at a question and be like, I have no idea what this is asking.
-The exam was easier than I thought. This is my personal experience so YMMV, but (probably like you if you’re reading this) I spent way too much on forums. I don’t know if people just f’d up their study regiments or what, but the panic level I felt from reading the forums is not warranted
-The SIMs were easier than any that I saw in Wiley. Not by much, and I’m not claiming that I aced them by any means, but a couple of them were softballs while the other 2 were moderately challenging. When I say “softball,” I mean, they clearly tested your knowledge but weren’t in the same vein of obscurity/depth as the Wiley ones.
-The WC felt like a victory lap, and it should for you too. If you’re smart, you googled something about how to prep for this, but if not, google “BEC WC template” and follow that. No, you won’t be able to apply it verbatim to all 3, but if you memorize the template then you will greatly improve your ability to complete the section on time. The questions I got felt like softballs here compared to Wiley, but again, you must put the time in to know your shtuff
-My advice is to write down a list of names of all the formulas and lists that you need to know on a sheet of paper, and then on a separate paper write down the formulas and lists themselves. As you go through your lessons/studying, add items to the list and constantly test yourself on memorizing this. I don’t know how BEC compares to other exams, but the number of “memorizable” lists/formulas seemed very manageable here.
-Easter egg tip at the bottom of post: You can email candidatecare@nasba.org at least 2 weeks before your exam and request actual paper and pencil for your exam. They’ll forward your request to the testing center.
