I love it how Tim Gearty expects us to walk in to the exam knowing: TIPPIEACDO, HELPME, DORCS, CARMRANSON, AMISADMRFIRSALA, TIPPYPASSER, CRIME, etc without getting the terms confused

Which of the mnemonics do you guys think are the most important to know word for word, other than TIPPIEACDO and CRIME?

LMNOP got me through the entire exam

    Ninja + Wiley Test Bank: [FAR - 81] [REG - 76] [BEC - 88] [AUD - 73](doh!)

    Becker Videos: [AUD - 82]

I have little use for Gearty's mnemonics in general. I think the device needs to be used judiciously–not popping up on every other page–to be effective. I'm convinced he comes up with his silly offerings because of some misguided belief that they qualify him as a “good instructor.” He also doesn't even construct them very well. In a good mnemonic, each letter should represent the *crucial* word in the phrase (or rule or item) at issue. Gearty's letters frequently represent meaningless words (prepositions, etc.) in the phrase that do little to jog the memory.

I ignored most of Gearty's mnemonics and I never once regretted it during either of the sections I've had so far. When I have used them, they were usually ones I came up with myself that had much more meaning to me. I wouldn't stress over keeping all the Gearty nonsense straight.

I agree completely, although his GRASPP did help a lot in FAR.

Becker's does have poor quality control.. a few questions in the passmaster didn't make sense at all and I have noticed typos in the book as well.

The only two I memorized for AUD were ICHAMBO and PIPS.

    FAR - 79 - 07/2012
    AUD - 65, 78 - 11/2012
    BEC - 76 - 11/2012
    REG - 78 - 01/2013
    ETH - 98 - 01/2013

    Material: Wiley books

    @CheeseDog

That's a really great point. I'm not going to go as far as you and say that I had no use for the mnemonics — I liked them for the most part. You're definitely right that he “cheats” too much though. P for “Personally Taxed S-Corps”??? Yeah sure buddy, lol. But then again, I still remember it, so hey.

i used a few select ones for both FAR and BEC. the ones i used seemed to make sense and be helpful…..i will admit though some of them are completely worthless so i just ignore those.

i think peter and tim do a good job with the material, however, i never want to hear either one of their voices again after this process is over.

This thread just gave me an idea…

Jeff should create a sticky thread with useful mnemonics listed by exam section and topic.

Unless of course they are copyrighted…

    FAR - 79 - 07/2012
    AUD - 65, 78 - 11/2012
    BEC - 76 - 11/2012
    REG - 78 - 01/2013
    ETH - 98 - 01/2013

    Material: Wiley books

Yeah – I would probably get a nastigram. I'm not a fan of going overboard with mnemonics anyway…I only use a few in the ninja notes.

Actually, I'm not a big fan either. I think it's generally better to understand the underlying concepts rather than trying to memorize lists. But some candidates swear by them.

    FAR - 79 - 07/2012
    AUD - 65, 78 - 11/2012
    BEC - 76 - 11/2012
    REG - 78 - 01/2013
    ETH - 98 - 01/2013

BOIS for expensing vs capitalizing leases.

    Couldn't pass again!

99% of those are absolutely useless. The only ones I really memorized and used were the ones associated with COSO in BEC.

But I guess it really depends on the person. Personally understanding how something works > memorizing a word/phrase every single time. Becker with give you a mnemonic for everything

    REG - Passed!!
    BEC - Passed
    FAR - Passed
    AUD - Passed

I've only taken FAR (passed first try) and am preparing for BEC. That being said, I swear by the mnemonics on FAR. The MAC-GRASPP, SE PAPI and SPACE mnemonics were awesome for governmental accounting, and SIRAGE was also an invaluable one. Other ones, like OWNS for lease capitalization weren't so great on it's own, but definitely helped me remember asset depreciation for lease capitalization.

On My Way to a CPA...

    FAR- 83 (12/02/12) (Try #1...by some miracle)
BEC- 80 (2/23/13) (Try #1... by some miracle)
AUD- 77 (05/04/13) (Try #1... by some miracle)
    REG- 79 (08/03/13)(Try #1... by some miracle)

Roger had quite a bit of mnemonics to memorize and my first two tests I remembered about 10 of them. My test last week I decided not to because I didn't remember really using them all too much during the first two tests.

Didn't miss them this test. Perhaps I just understood the whole process by my third time around. I don't think it hurts to understand them. But there's not really any “free questions” by memorizing them.

    REG - 68 | 71 | 88 | 86
    FAR - 72 | 74 | 79
    AUD - 66 | 70 | 77
    BEC - 62 | 74 | 80

    Guess that means I'm a soon-to-be CPA!

If anyone can tell me what LMNOP ICHAMBO and PIPS stand for that would be awesome!

I don't think mnemonics are copyrighted as I've seen roger use the same ones as gearty in FAR so this should be an allowed form of assistance.
