Using Research Tab For Communication…

I took the AUD exam today and had A LOT of time left over. I do not understand why they give so much time compared to FAR. I really took my time and still was left with an hour. I could have finished 30+ minutes earlier. But I digress…

With the extra time, I decided to use the research tab to help for communication (well it was helpful for other simulation tabs too actually) and the specific stuff I took I reworded and then further explained as well. However, there were some phrases I would use that were taken straight from the text. Just certain words/phrases that were more professional. I’m not sure if I could get in trouble for that?

Additionally, there was one perfect sentence encompassing the topic that, although I could have used my own words because the topic was easy, I decided to quote the standard. I put quotation marks and referenced it.

I could have done this off the top off my head, since neither writing was specifically hard, but with the extra time decided to refine the writing using the research.

Is this frowned upon? Can they catch this and if so will they fail me or something?

I was really prepared for the test and definitely believe I passed. I just don’t want something like this to screw me. My Audit professor in college used to let us bring a “cheat sheet” into class because he said to us that when taking the Audit exam they had the standards researchable. Additionally, I have heard other people tell me they looked stuff up. So, I thought it was okay, but read something online saying it could be deemed cheating? Ahhh…

Well, here’s to hoping I’m okay and pass this.

Anyways, BEC and REG, here I come!

You're fine. Using the research tab is not cheating. Using their phrasing is not cheating. Thankfully, this isn't an English class.

Referencing a standard should give you bonus points, depending on who the memo was addressed to.

As long as the person reading your paper thinks you've answered the question in an appropriate manner, you're fine. As far as I know, there is no check for “plagiarism”.

It's not cheating, let's not be paranoid.

They give you the research tab and leave it available for you, then you can use it.

Plus, in real professional life, CPAs are definitely able to use literature when writing memos, they just need to know where to look and what to look for.

I extensively used the research tab for my sims in AUD, it was very helpful. Not very useful for the written communications in AUD and I scored weaker, lol.

    FAR - 7/26/10 - 95
    AUD - 8/10/10 - 88
    BEC - 8/31/10 - 88
    REG - 10/15/10 - 95
