How did you feel about your SIMS on your way out of the exam?

MCQ is pretty straight forward, you either know it or you dont — or you can use your accumulated knowledge to make an educated guess BUT when it comes to the SIMS if you dont know it, your only possible chance would be to use the AL, BUT, what happens if you cant find an answer in the AL? WHAT DO YOU DO (other than panic and sweat bullets)?

    (edited)

during my retake, i dont want to end up doing that again because i dont want another 69 (obviously) so my question is anybody have any other hail mary suggestions? i felt the same way about my sims for FAR and ended up with a 75 (thank god and jeff)

(please disregard the wandering thoughts and punctuation)

lol you might want to edit your post since that is a little bit too specific. Some other people have commented on that exact same simulation though, so it seems like it's a fairly common simulation for people to receive. Sometimes there just isn't any AL for some problems (IFRS and IAS comes to mind) and you just have to make your best educated guesses.

I've taken 3 exams so far (FAR, REG, and AUD) and I felt that Audit had the most straightforward simulations. If you feel like you did well on the other audit sims, I wouldn't worry about the ________ one in particular.

there is an entire auditing standard devoted to that topic
    https://www.aicpa.org/Research/Standards/AuditAttest/DownloadableDocuments/AU-00332.pdf

under the clarified standards it can be found here:
    https://www.aicpa.org/Research/Standards/AuditAttest/DownloadableDocuments/AU-C-00501.pdf

it is why i always suggest people studying AUD printout the lists and at least read the descriptive paragraph of each standard. it really does help to know what is where on exam day.

last min attempt suggestions is make sure you fill in each answer even if you didn't know the answer. Panic is usual with all sims in all exams except bec. Aud just practice sims, I think a lot of people leave that out. Bc I was real strong in MCQ, but everytime I would get to a sim, I'd be a deer in head lights. But after practicing an making sure I knew what was up. I did well on the sims. The more practice, the more comfortable I got doing sims.

If you got a 69 I doubt it was because of only one SIM. You likely scored low on most MCQs and most SIMS. If you only missed one SIM you would have scored a 95 like I did 🙂

SIMs require a lot a practice, as much as MCQs, and researching AL also requires practice.
I used Gleim SIMS (book and software, including AL research).

    ohio-

Thank you for your input. I realize that it was not just that one Sim, I was expressing my concern over Sims in general.

I have registered to use the AL from the AICPA for AUD, my question is whats the best way to use it efficiently?

    Links to the standards:

Auditing – use the Clarified, always AU-C
    https://www.aicpa.org/research/standards/auditattest/pages/clarifiedsas.aspx

    Attestation – always AT – https://www.aicpa.org/Research/Standards/AuditAttest/Pages/SSAE.aspx

Compilation and Review – AR, but Reviews are covered under some other standards, too, so watch out…
    https://www.aicpa.org/RESEARCH/STANDARDS/COMPILATIONREVIEW/Pages/compilation%20and%20review%20standards.aspx

Ethics – AICPA Code of Professional Conduct https://pub.aicpa.org/codeofconduct/Ethics.aspx

PCAOB 5 for Issuers – An Audit of Internal Control Over Financial Reporting That Is Integrated with An Audit of Financial Statements – https://pcaobus.org/Standards/Auditing/pages/auditing_standard_5.aspx

and then AICPA makes their Online Professional Library (OPL) available free for 6 months to anyone with an active NTS. some folks on here say it helps them learn more effective searches. you can submit your request here: https://www.aicpa.org/BecomeACPA/CPAExam/ForCandidates/HowToPrepare/Pages/literature.aspx

i didn't find the OPL to be helpful. but hey that's just me.

i did not use aicpa's opl – i printed the homepages of the standards listed above and read the descriptive paragraph for each. as i did mcq's i would refer to the list from the AL provided in ninja as the reference. i ready many of them. you should read the opinion standards and note there are a couple of them for opinions.
you also need to pay close attention to the question. is it for an issuer (PCAOB standards apply and all of those are online too) or nonissuer, those are the links above. is it asking about review, compilation or audit? being familiar with the standards will help you with sims. the aicpa are pdf's so each one is searchable.
completing the sims on the exam takes time. i had about 2 hours to do mine. that means you have to prepare well enough to get through the mcq's at a pace of about 40 mins a testlet with no breaks. i had no time left when i exited the exam.
everything in audit is in the standards so get cozy with them.

I do not know if this has been mentioned on this thread but you can also type AU, AT (according to the engagement in question) along with whatever action or topic you want to look up for in google. I can vouch for reading the standars in addition to the review material. I felt that helped me to really grasp the concepts and to get the big picture in audit. Whenever I was doing MCQs and I saw that I got a wrong answer and I did not understood why I went to google and typed AU engagement letter (for example) and read the standard or used Control + F to look for certain key words in the standard.
