I just want to make sure I am clear on something. So if I think I got less than 75% of the questions correct, there is still a chance with a curve that I could pass with a 75? Really? Only in America

    Reg 11/15/2011 - 80
    Aud 02/28/2012 - 81
    Bec 05/31/2012 - 78
Far 08/31/2012 - 83 Do you believe in Miracles, YES !!!

Yup. The exam is curved, so even if you get only 50% right, you can still pass.

The questions are weighted so you dont have to get 75% of them right…also the exam has questions that don't count so there really is no way to tell….

Who said the AICPA is not generous?

75 doesn't mean 75% correct, it means you got 75 points. You can also get questions wrong and still score a 99 because all that means is you capped out the amount of points you can get. Some questions are worth points more than others so all you have to do really is accumulate 75 points out of 100+ potential points to pass. It's NOT curved.

The CPA exam is not curved.

    https://www.aicpa.org/BecomeACPA/CPAExam/ForCandidates/FAQ/Pages/computer_faqs_3.aspx

“The CPA Examination is NOT curved. Every candidate’s score is entirely

independent of other candidates’ Examination results.

The CPA Examination is a criterion-referenced examination which means that it rests upon pre-determined standards. Every candidate’s performance is measured against established standards to determine whether the candidate has demonstrated the level of knowledge and skills that is represented by the passing score. Every candidate is judged against the same standards, and every score is an independent result.”

as a smart man told me once.. your score is simply the amount of confidence the AICPA has in you to protect and serve the public.. your score is not curved.. and your score is not a precentage.

“”The CPA Examination is NOT curved. Every candidate’s score is entirely

independent of other candidates’ Examination results.””

Which is why item response theory weights the questions based on average responses by candidates….. Do you see the inconsistency….Even if it is past year candidates, it is still a theory used.

An older CPA said to me fact that you can get more than 75 points with less than 75% is almost a no one left behind mentality due to all of the older CPAs going into retirement and a low amount of young people going for CPA. It will be a matter of time before a SOX-like act extends into the CPA exam grading. Not sure if I agree with that statement since the grading system has changed, but food for thought.

Supply and demand. I definitely wish the exam was even tougher. Look at all the newly minted lawyers with no job prospects or working for close to minimum wage because of an abundance of supply. We don't want that to happen to us.

Let the exam get tougher after I pass, lol. But think about it, it is getting tougher with new format. The pass rate used to be around 50%. Now, the pass rate is in the mid to low 40s. And this is only per section. I believe only 20 something percent pass all 4 parts.

@CPAMan – on the first try. I think like 80%+ pass eventually. That number needs to come down.

mini thats not true.. 80% of people eventually pass if they dont quit.. less than 10% of all candidate pass all 4 the first time around.. i still agree with your comment, however.

@reza – We said the same thing only I used 20% where you used 10%. 10% sounds low, I am pretty sure more than that pass all on first try.

I am lowering the percentage with my performance. I've decided my mission is to lower the curve. I will select all “A”s on my next BEC attempt as a gesture, then bolt out after 20 minuetes. Will probably get a 89!
