Studying for 2 at once!

    Hi all,

So, I’m in a bit of a unique situation. I just graduated college in December, and I’m ready to get the CPA exam out of the way. The problem is, I moved from VA (where I was eligible to take the exam) to TX, where I am not (due to the ethics course requirement). This might sound unconventional, but I’ve decided to go ahead and study for the exam here in Texas, but take it in Virginia. I’ve blocked out the entire month of May to go home, and I want to make it worth my while, so I would like to take two parts while I’m there, in particular AUD and BEC.

Am I crazy? I’m not working right now, not married, no kids, so I’m totally open to studying 6+ hours a day. The problem is, I don’t know how to go about this. I just got the entire self-study Becker course in the other day. It’s suggesting with as many hours as I’m planning to devote to studying a week (approx. 30), to study two lessons a week. Should I study one AUD, one BEC? Or knock one completely out, then the other? If I start studying now, that leaves over two months until I’d be taking the exam, and I’m afraid I’ll forget some of the stuff. I guess my plan is to study one, then the other, then review for the first exam, take it, then review for the second exam and take it about two weeks later.

I would really like to accomplish taking two parts within that month I’m home, but not at the expense of failing both. I have a lot of time on my hands, but is it even possible? Anyone ever done this before? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

    Keely

You know you can take the exam in Texas even though you aren't doing it through the Texas state board, right? I would suggest studying one at a time. If you can put the time and effort into it then you can knock out each one in 3-4 weeks (per section) like I am doing.

    BEC - Feb 2012: 80
    AUD - Feb 2012: 84
    FAR - Apr 2012: 78
    REG - May 2012: 90

    Thanks Becker!

Cant you still take the exam in Texas? You would still be a Virginia candidate, but you just physically take the exam in Texas. I would just try to do one at a time. Keeping all the info straight for one section is hard enough. I wouldnt want to study for two at the same time. There have been a few people who werent working and had no commitments and basically studying 12 hours a day for 2 weeks and passed. Its tough, but doable. I would probably give yourself 3-4 weeks for each section, one section at a time. I still think you can take the exam in Texas even though you are a Virginia candidate (and then at some point transfer your passes to Texas once you have completed the other requirements).

…no!??!?!? Ha, I think you just made my day. Why are there different requirements just to take the exam in different states then? I can understand the licensing requirements differing, but, although I realize it's a national exam, why make the ethics rule, the 150 hour rule? I'm sorry, I'm a recent grad and quite new to all this, but no, I'd never heard of that. I'll look into it. Thank you!

Wow, I had no idea you could utilize a ‘proctor.' That is awesome! I am definitely going to go one at a time then. I'm still waiting for my NTS from the VA Board…any idea how to go about the proctoring process? Thanks again, guys.

It is up to the state boards to determine the licensing requirements because they are the ones that actually administer your license… one common requirement is the CPA exam which all 50 states use as their uniform test. Other than that the states differ slightly in education and work experience requirements but the CPA exam is the same. I almost applied to sit for the exam in another state because I didn't think I could get the ethics requirement done in time but I ended up getting it done in a one week class over Christmas break (I really lucked out).

And you don't use a proctor you just schedule it at a prometrics testing center… they are all over the country

Oh, I see. Wow, definitely not as complicated as I thought. I'm really, really glad I asked. This makes me life so much easier. I'll wait to get my NTS then go from there. Good luck on your upcoming exam dates!

If you don't mind me asking, where'd you take your ethics course? A one week course would be really awesome, because the only ones I've seen that Texas accepts are the semester-long ones.

Keelydare1, My situation almost mirrors your. I applied in Ohio, but right after that had to move to Texas. I was able to take the exam in Texas and passed REG in Jan 2011. since we have the 18month window, i took it a little easy and before I knew it, I was hit with another move. This time we had to relocate to INDIA for my husband's job. Now I am planning to come back to US for a month to try my luck at the other parts. I am planning to attack FAR, BEC and AUD between April 15-May 15.

I know it is insane, but since I have to literally spend thousands of $ to take this exam I am planning to cram those 3 in the given time. I can study 6+ hours a day, husband travels a lot and my study time is restricted to my son's school hours. I just started studying AUd from yesterday. My window expires in AUG and this seems like the only shot I have before losing REG :(((

Good luck to all of us!! Any advice to pass these 3 is welcome ….

    REG 83 (Lost credit), 78 🙂
    AUD 8/29/13
    BEC 67, 75
    FAR 76

@keelydare1, I took my ethics course at Dallas Baptist University as a non-degree seeking student. They offer this course a lot and it was fairly easy (no tests, just some homework and reading every day and a final ethics paper that is really easy). The course was from 8-5 everyday for a week but we usually got out before 1 or 2 so it wasn't that bad. I think you can also take it online (this method is longer than a week however) but it has to be with a certain professor in order for you to get credit for it with the state board. If you are in the Dallas area I would strongly recommend doing this course in a week at DBU because it knocks it out really fast and you don't have to worry about it ever again. Here is the class info for this semester for the week long one.

    MANA 6320, Jim Underwood, 3/12/2012 – 3/16/2012

    MANA 6320, Jim Underwood, 5/21/2012 – 5/25/2012

It is probably too late to enroll in the one that is in March but you definitely have time to enroll in the one in May if you get your application in during the next few weeks.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions

    BEC - Feb 2012: 80
    AUD - Feb 2012: 84
    FAR - Apr 2012: 78
    REG - May 2012: 90

    Thanks Becker!

Thanks so much! I'm actually in Houston, but I will look into the online class. I know I need to take it eventually, might as well go ahead and take it now.

    AUD: (5/2012) 91
    REG: (8/2012) 82
