I just did the sample test on the cpa website and I don’t understand the authoritative literature section. Is it the same as it’s always been where they give you a question and you have to find the appropriate authoritative section? I only did the AUD practice test and didn’t see any question on any of the task based tabs regarding the literature. Any advice from people who have taken the new format?

    AUD 81 (2007), 73, 80
    REG 68 (2010), 76
    BEC 58 (2007), 75 DONE!!!!

The research portion of the TBS has changed. Now you have to search the new Accounting Standards Codification to find the answer. Which study materials are you using? I know that Becker walks you through how to do the research question. You can also go to https://asc.fasb.org/login and practice searching. I think it costs money but if you have an active NTS you can sign up for 6 months free.

Hey car, I have Becker but I don't see in the cbt/simulation program anywhere to see an example of finding the authoritative literature. Where exactly is it at in the software?

    Thanks!

@SMRichard: Maybe I didn't understand your question. Are you asking if there are research questions in the AUD section still? The answer is I'm not sure. I took FAR last month and there were two research questions in the TBS section of the exam. I thought that would be the same for REG and AUD as well, but I could be wrong.

@CPA2011plz: In the new 2011 FAR book in F1 they walk you through the new codification in the lectur and also in the book. Not sure where it would be located in the REG book. As I stated above it might be possible that there are no research questions in REG. I took it under the old format.

    Sorry if I confused anyone.

I just looked in the REG and AUD message boards and there are research questions in both TBS. Out of the 7 TBS there are 2 research questions. I'm not sure why the Becker book for REG wouldn't have the same info as the FAR book given that both sections have research questions.

I've been told research worth 1 point last year. How many points do you guys think worth research in 2011? I don't know how to study for it.

    FAR 70,89
    REG November 2014
BEC Didn't even look at it.

I guess I don't really know how to ask my question. I was confused on the cpa exam site because they give you the tab where you can search the codifications but I didn't see a question that pertained to that. I'm sure it hasn't changed too much but the uncertainty scares me a little.

Account Ant – I don't think there's any way to really study for it. Looks like from your previous scores you have probably done alright with it in the past. I love your BEC score. 🙂 I stupidly took BEC one year when I was working about 70 hours a week and didn't have time to study at all. I ended up with a score of 38. Depressing!!!

I just use the Gleim study questions because I can't afford much more right now. I still had access to FAR online through Gleim though (with only a few days of access left!) and went through one of the new 2011 simulations and it looks like of the 5-7 TBS's one of them will be a research question. That's when you go to the authoritative literature tab and search for the answer, then go back to the research tab to input your answer. It all makes sense now.

Thank you to everyone for your responses. 🙂

SMRichard: Overall the research question worked the same way as before. They pose a question and then you have to search for the answer. The only difference is you search the Codification now. As long as you know how to search the Codification you will be fine.
