In order to be successful with the research tab, you want to utilize the “search within” functionality. This will allow you to execute a keyword search within a refined area, thus leading you more quickly to the answer. The fact pattern will provide you with certain keywords–it will be your responsibility to identify such words and use them in your search. This portion of SIMS should be the easiest.

Any and all chapters are candidates for simulations on the exam–not one chapter should be focused on more than another. Yes, the search within function is the easiest way to get to the right answer. Make sure you understand the fact pattern and then begin your search using keywords from the fact pattern–that is how I won on the research tabs.

Be familiar with the research questions by practicing them. For each section they are different–the tax code for REG, SSARS etc for AUD, and so on. They aren't the same for each section and can be a bit tricky. But they are quick points and should be done first, IMHO, when doing the SIMS.

This section should be the easiest but it is not always. I have messed up before. Here are some things to keep in mind.

    1. The correct answer lies in the prompt. Find key words from the prompt and use them in search

    2. Once you locate the appropriate section of guidance, use search within to narrow it down further

    3. The correct answer should answer the inital prompt exactly. If you find yourself trying to rationalize a piece of guidance back to the prompt, then you're not quite there yet. The correct answer should include several of the key words from the original prompt, sometimes, even a complete phrase. The correct answer is hardly ever (if never) in the introduction, background, or definitions part of any ASC codification/IRC. Go further down to the body of the codification. This is typically where it gives specific guidance on how to apply certain accounting/tax rules. REMEMBER: If you find yourself trying to rationalize a piece of guidance back to the prompt, by making assumptions or what not -OR- there are not that many matching key words in the that piece of guidance to the prompt, then you have headed in the wrong direction

    4. If you find that you have headed in the wrong direction, don't dfreak out. Quickly pick another key word(s) from the prompt and start again. The correct answer lies in the prompt!!!

I agree with everything ImaCPA168 said.

I would add a suggestion that you do the research questions last as they can be time sinks. You don't want to lose points on 2 or 3 other questions because you were stuck on a research question.

I remember Minimorty saying that the research question is free points and if you get it wrong, then you deserve to fail.
