My study plan backfired….

Someone at work asked me how I keep from falling asleep with two kids, a wife, a brand new career and job, a side business I am cranking up (I am an EA also), responsibilities at Church, etc…..I told him “Easy, I just sit in an uncushioned wood chair at the kitchen table to study”. It works.

The problem now is that it apparently has caused my lower back to go out. It feels like it need to pop but won’t pop and when I turn a certain way, it is just simply AGONIZING!

I’m resorting to plan B whatever that is when BEC studying starts this next week.

Oh yikes, I feel your pain because I spent almost all my hours studying at the kitchen table. Hope the pain eases up ASAP. If you have access to a hot tub anywhere, it really DOES help!

Plan B is sitting on a comfortable couch or bed and exercising from time to time 🙂

    I hate chairs 😛

You lower back likely needs to be adjusted by a chiropractor. I wasn't a believer until I went to one 2-3 years ago.

Important: ask friends/family/facebook who they go to in your area.

Yep.. I agree that you should go to a chiropractor. It is amazing what a few visits to a good chiropractor can do. Also, try to get one that has his or her own massage therapists in his office – that way they can “prescribe” massages that will be covered by insurance. 🙂

I've been having to go quite a bit since I started roller derby.

Just make sure it's a good one. I was referred to chiropractor few years ago 'cause my back was bothering me. He did some checking and tested my strength and told me my left leg is stronger than my right one 'cause the left leg is slight taller. Couple weeks later, he did the same checking and told me my right leg is way stronger than my left one 'cause my right one is slighter taller……That was the last time I saw a chiropractor…P.S. I walk normal just like everyone. 🙂

As stupid as this sounds. Study STANDING UP. Sitting on your ass for 12 hours a day is the WORST thing for you. Evolution and/or God did not design us to live that way. Get a really tall table, like they have in bars, and stand while you study. I'm telling you after a month you will feel great. It's annoying at first because you'll want to sit but after you get used to it, it's fantastic. An alternative I've seen work, is to ditch the chair and sit on a giant yoga ball. That's supposed to be much better for your back too and you can still use your desk but if you can standing is the best.

@dtomasello – I've heard that some companies are actually creating standing desks for people. I really wish I could get that at my current job. I probably could if I pitched a fit with HR but I'm pretty sure it would be a career limiting move for me. I don't like rocking the boat. But if they ever start making it a standard around here… I will jump on that bus right away!

I never had back problems when I waited tables or worked at a blood bank… because I was always standing! Now that I sit all day, my back is constantly hurting. I read in an article that exercising regularly does not fully counter-act the negative effects of sitting all day. I believe it, too. I exercise at least 6 hours per week and my back is still always hurting. I really should call my chiropractor…
