Sooooo….my AUD exam is on May 20. I paid for all four in one swoop (i.e., single check payment) and I’m literally at the point where I am gonna toss a coin as to whether I do REG or BEC next. I actually scheduled them both for August 12th, which is the last day I can take them before my beautiful NTS – which I am gonna frame after I take it to my fourth exam – expires.

I really am at a roadblock here because both of them look to be about the same nowadays in terms of content and difficulty on the exam. BEC now has SIMs. It didn’t used to. REG, like FAR, has generally been challenging for people. Now, the BEC books are a bit skinnier. Fewer topics. But…the test itself is of the same magnitude as any of the other three tests.

Some people, including Roger, say “We recommend doing BEC as your last one; it’s kind of a broad summation of everything and there are ties between the BEC topics and those topics of the other three exams” or words to that effect. Kinda makes sense, I don’t know?

As I say, I scheduled both for Saturday, August 12th. Ultimately, I will be cancelling one of them and forefeiting the $$ paid because I won’t have time to study for it. Perhaps some of you have suggestions as to why I might choose to do REG over BEC, or BEC over REG??

You can do this. I did BEC in 6 weeks and REG in 8 without feeling rushed.

I bet you could grind out both if you tried really hard. Schedule REG for around July 5-10 and BEC on August 12

I used to think that FAR and REG would require 12 weeks due to the sheer amount of information in them but yeah. 8 weeks is more than enough for any section. It really depends how you use those 8 weeks. Also, this includes working FT, since if you're not, you should take less time. I GENUINELY think you can knock out both. Take a week break after AUD and start grinding that REG for a test around early to mid July. Then go hard on BEC.

Yes I do agree taking BEC last because it really the sum of all its parts. Some of the BLaw stuff in REG overlaps with BEC.

Hit REG first, hit it hard for 6-8 weeks and sit for the exam. Jump straight into BEC for the remaining part of the window and hit it as hard as you can. You already paid for the exam, the worst thing that could happen is you have a realistic practice test.

@hasy – thanks for the advice but 8 weeks is not enough time for most of the sections if you work full time. It might be for BEC, but not any of the others. Maybe I'm just not as smart as you or others on here are.

@industrycpa – yeah, if I wasn't working, I could grind them both out. But, I have to eat. I never planned to pass these exams all that quickly.


@rtalfson – true…I could actually take both on August 12th. I'd have to drive to a different testing center for the second one though!

I'll be doing REG next and BEC after that. Using Gleim books and Roger MCQ/TBS but not textbooks/vids. Roger FAR and AUD were just so-so, and a number of people on here have said that his REG and BEC are not very good.

I work full time. 6 to 8 weeks really was sufficient for me. I'm no EWS candidate but four passes in four tries is what counts, right? :dunno

Don't sell yourself short; it's not about brains so much as it is about effective and efficient study time. Know your strengths and learning style to maximize your results.

@mecrushya – Well, what works for you isn't necessarily what works for the person sitting next to you. I've got a couple good hours on weekday evenings, and weekends I use to do things that I don't have time during the week to do. But putting in 10-12 hour marathon study sessions on weekends is not something that I can handle. It's too much, I gotta space it out. I know what I'm capable of – and I know I'm not capable of knocking out a section in only 8 weeks. Unless I had no job maybe. And, I'm not in the “four passes in four tries” club.

REG first but you can do both. REG 6 weeks, BEC 5 weeks. I started re-studying for REG from scratch as soon as the superbowl was over and took it 2/20 (16 days I think). Then started on BEC immediately after and took it 3/10 (17 days I think). I was surprised I passed both but I went for it to try and avoid the long delay in the next score release. But I did deplete my vacation balance and was putting in 8-14 hour days.

I don't know how anyone working FT could knock out an Exam in 6-8 weeks, although some candidates do. Maybe 8 weeks, but 6 weeks and FT would be fricking miserable. Do what works for You and understand all candidates are different. And, always always Quality over quantity and speed. Goodluck!

Better to Pass 1 Exam, than fail 2 exams due to rushing. Retakes are Horrible, but are part of this process for most candidates!

@cpa4928 – yeah I'm not afraid of retakes. I'm all about retakes. Each one is a learning experience. Wanna hear how many times I failed my written drivers test? No? Well, I'll tell you anyway. FOUR. In my state (Oregon, at that time but California now) I missed 7 questions four times in a row. You were only allowed to miss 6. Granted, two of those attempts were cold, no studying. Fifth time was a charm…I almost aced it. If I'd failed that fifth time, I would not have been able to take either it or the road test for another whole year. So, some adrenaline and fear and whatever else inside of me made sure I didn't flunk again. (The road test was a breeze, 1st time pass, and I am the best driver I know, I hate how everyone else drives! Never gotten a ticket except for parking.) I am sure the same thing is going to happen with the CPA exams. You can only flunk them so many times before you pass. You start to see see themes and variations of questions and question formats that you saw on earlier exams, and they can only ask the same things so many different ways.

Sorry for the driving diversion but I felt this thread of mine was in desperate need of a change of pace.
