Failed AUD, but haven't taken any other exams yet. What should I do…

Failed AUD with a 73 (grr). It was my first attempt at any of the exams. My NTS is good until April/13.

I understand that I have to apply for a new NTS in order to retake AUD, right? Does that affect my other exams? Is the new NTS good for all 4 exams and for another 6 months?

If I do that, do I have to pay again for the three exams I haven’t taken? If that’s the case, I might as well just take all three other exams in Jan/Feb to just get a feel for them… Or do I just have to pay to re-take audit? I would like to just take audit the first week of January to get it out of the way since the studying is still fresh.

Thanks for any advice, I know this is all probably a straightforward process but I am confused…

You can apply for an NTS just for AUD and keep the other NTS for the other 3 exams. Make sure to check the expiration date on the original NTS. I don't know what state you are in and the expiration time varies from state to state. Sorry about the 73! They SUCK!!!

Thanks for the quick response. I'm in MA and my original NTS expires 4/8

If my NTS expires, do I just have to pay for a new NTS, or do I lose the application fees too?

I don't know about the application fees. That also varies from state to state. Check with your State Board Monday. Good Luck!

Once your NTS expires, you have to pay for everything all over again. 🙁

My NTS expired (had signed up for all 4 exams at once), so I reapplied for BEC and had to pay again for both NTS and registration fees. I am in MA, too.

I personally think it's a mistake to apply for all 4 sections of the exam at once. Six months is not enough for most people to study and pass every section but I think NASBA is to blame because they don't do a good job of explaining to first-time test takers how the whole process works. Also, you should schedule your exams one at a time and only when you are ready to take them.

@porkchopsandwiches if I were you I'd give AUD one more shot in JAN now that all the material is still fresh in your mind. You came so close. Next time you will pass.

Shout out to my home state of Mass. 413

    I'll be home for Christmas…

Thanks for the info. I agree that I wish they did a better job explaining the process from the beginning as I thought I needed to apply for all four.

I think I will get an NTS for audit and try again the first week of January.

I'm starting with a big 4 firm (in tax) on January 7th just in time for tax busy season, so I doubt I will be able to do the other three before my original NTS expires April 8.

Do you think it's worth it to just take the exams I'm not ready for (as in, haven't studied at all) just to see what it's like? Is there any potential downside?
