Hi, Yesterday, I was written up by my manager. I don’t clearly understand the write up. It is very odd, she is a new manager and I don’t think she understands what write-ups are for. I’m waiting for HR to call me back.

Anyhow.. I really really really needed this weekend to study for AUD. I’m trying to read the pages, but nothng is sticking because I keep thinking about the incident yesterday. It was sooo weird!

I have a problem. When I’m upset I can’t concentrate on anything else.. the same situation just keeps going over and over and over in my mind. What can I do to clear my mind? I’ve been up since 3 this morning trying to study.. and I’ve gotten no where. It’s currently 10am.

So depressed and distraught..I’m not at risk for losing my job and I didn’t sign the write up.. I know it will probably get worse next week.. I have AUD in a week and a half.. please help.. any ideas?

That is a tough one, you have to get your mind back into it and push yourself to study. What usually helped me was taking a test, and getting a lower score – this usually lite a fire under my a** to get going on the studies.

    FAR - 95
    AUD - 82
    REG - 94
    BEC - 84

CPA Someday, trust me, the write up is not important in the total scope of your professinal career. Corporate America is full of bs politics. I was written-up a couple (3x) times in my younger part of my career….at the time I thought it was awful, but I had my side of the story………..My experience has been that female supervisors feel they have more to prove so they usually are more harsh, especially against other females…….I hope I didn't open a can for worms….lol

    BEC=77, FAR=78, REG=73,74,80, AUD=70,69, 84 DONE!

Hi there! So sorry that you're feeling distracted. I experienced a distraction in my life right before I was to sit for my first exam section (FAR) in the form of a skin cancer diagnosis. Literally, just a few days before the exam, I found out I probably had skin cancer on my face, and I had to get a biopsy done, which left me with stitches and a scuzzed up nose, not to mention the worry that goes along with it. I found it extremely hard to concentrate in those final days, and I had planned to do so much in that time.

Here is my suggestion, for what it's worth: Allow yourself a set amount of time to worry about your job situation like crazy – maybe 10 – 20 minutes max. Set a timer. Just sit there and think about it all you want. Catastrophize away, or whatever. Let your mind do what it wants to do. When the timer goes off after the allotted time period, then STOP with the thoughts, shift gears, and move on to your studying. If more thoughts emerge, just tell yourself that you will not be sidetracked from studying and that you'll have another timed worry session later. The timer and setting aside of time for your job concerns is a tangible way of compartmentalizing your brain's tasks.

This helped me a lot through my studies. I hope it is helpful to you too. Worry is nonproductive, and the more you can tell yourself that it's not helping, the better. You may find that delving into your study materials will take your mind off the work situation. I hope all goes well for you.

Thanks everyone! This has really helped-amazing how some inspiration can really change your attitude 🙂 I did get through the rest of chapter 3 in AUD today, but I wanted to be done with Chapter 4 by now..

Jan in Wi.. Nice scores! You're doing great!!! You are correct about how the more I tried to push it out of my mind and just kept trying to focus on studying it eventually went away.. Mind you.. to be honest it really took till about 2pm to get boggled down to start comprehending everything.. It's still not great.. but it's getting better the more I push myself and the more I hear from you guys! You will be fine Jan in WI! I didn't set the timer.. but I may have to do that tomorrow morning when I settle down to study again.

NJCPA – you did not open a can of worms. It is what it is…

When something is bothering me I just tell myself that everything turns out OK in the end. You know you're not going to lose your job and you know that, despite the fact that next week may suck and it may be a struggle, everything will turn out OK. So just envision yourself being past next week. Imagine it's two weeks from now, the dust has settled at work, you've taken AUD, and you're glad that you didn't let the work incident slow down your studying. With that thought, begin studying! Tell tourself the work situation is only temporary, but the CPA certification is something that will be with you forever once you pass. So instead of concentrating on the thing that will affect your life for one week, concentrate on the thing that will help you the rest of your life.

    CPA Someday

This is an odd thing to suggest but it will work.

When something like “replaying the same memory ” of events starts. In your mind yell STOP and remind yourself that you will do ________________ to work through the problem/ or the situation is over. Then continue to study. If the memory starts up in again in your mind yell STOP and the remind yourself of the solution or that the event is done.

After a few times you wil stop dwelling on the problem.

    Good luck

The sooner you pass, the easier it'll be to get away from your new manager. (At least that's how I dealt with a similar situation – I had 2 sections left, and wanting to leave pushed me to study harder, pass and get out)

    I really can't pass again!
