From my understanding of letters of inquiry we(auditors) don't limit the scope when trying to get information from a lawyer. We want to know what they know and what they are willing to tell us pertaining to pending and threatened litigation since this could be a material adjustment to the Financial statements.

It does not limit our scope as auditors, however, if the lawyer responds and gives us information limited only to issues that the lawyer has spent significant time on.
