I have 2 weeks to study for one of the two exams but I’m not sure which . (I’ll be using Becker, self-study, and I’m on vacation for the next two weeks so studying is just about all I plan on doing all day everyday for the next two weeks)

Which one would you recommend I take?

From past experience, Which one did you feel was harder? How much study time would you recommend for each?

Any/All feedback is greatly appreciated!

I have not taken REG (studying right now for it). I feel your schedule of all day/night for 2 weeks straight is enough time for either section. People will have there own opinions, as I have heard from multiple people they felt audit was easier than REG and vice versa.

I am guessing this is your first exam? If so you might want to start with what your might have work experience in and/or intrigues you, which will get the ball rolling for you. If you are in public accounitng, I would do tax if you do tax and same goes for audit. Also consider what you felt stronger with during your undergrad (audit vs tax/business law).

I have to be honest, I feel overall REG is harder but this is a senior auditor talking here who does not do any corporate or individual taxes.

I'd say AUD, absolutely. Two weeks is hardly any time. I don't care if you're studying 20 hours a day. There comes a time when you will stop retaining information. For that reason I say pick the one with less information to know. That is AUD.

I don't see how you could do REG in 2 weeks, it's 50% more material than AUD….

I would say AUD especially with the changes coming up…. I'm studying for reg now and its a lot more than aud….

AUD has the least amount of material. However, AUD is a tricky word game. It is easy to study and difficult to pass. Additionally, I suggest that a CPA candidate take FAR before AUD. The AICPA is infamous for asking FAR questions on the AUD exam.

Studying the theory for AUD helped me to solve questions logically! Understanding theory helped me understand what wasn't right in the theoretical questions because I knew the rules for some of the choices.

@ Jezzny, I am in the same shoes. Have you decided which one to take? I am also in a dilemna between taking AUD or REG this year. But I would probably go on with AUD, get it out of the way, and take REG early 2011. I'm still thinking, though, if this is a wise move. I'm thinking of maximizing my study time for AUD this window and postpone REG 'till Jan 2011.

Is taking REG in 2011 a good move?

I studied from January 1 – January 10th (took test on January 11th and started my job January 12th) for AUD and passed with a 93. My scores would have all been in the 90's had I only had studying to do. However, I am married, work full-time at a CPA firm (with busy season) and had a new born baby in my home through the sections after AUD.

In addition, I had a life during those 2 weeks because I would study during the day and play at night. I left the AUD exam feeling like I had destroyed it and was disappointed with a 93.

AUD for sure. I overstudy for things, but took it today and it wasn't that bad. And there isn't much material, so that's a plus.

I felt my test taking of REG, BEC, FAR, and AUD seemed quite logical. Regulation concepts show up later in BEC and FAR (and I'm assuming AUD). BEC concepts come up in FAR (and perhaps AUD, to a degree). And as many say, FAR and AUD go hand-in-hand.

While that doesn't mean you need to do it in that order, if you'd like to try retaining anything I think that order is plausible. That said, I haven't done AUD, and think it's focused on a lot of details. REG isn't bad at all if you have a good background in tax and can grasp legal concepts quickly (or understand them because of college courses).
