Are you using the Research tab for other SIMS besides the Research question?

Here was my strategy going into test day… I had taken two practice tests so I knew how fast I could do the multiple choice questions and I wanted to leave plenty of time for the sims. Therefore, I managed my time so that I would have two full hours left just for the simulations (I highly suggest at least 1 hr and 45 min). Having this much time to do the sims allowed me to utilize the research tab to the fullest and squeeze out any extra points I could. I actually found an entire simulation word for word in the research tab. It is crucial that you actually finish the exam so I would go through each simulation once and mark the parts I wasn't for sure about. Once I completed each simulation which took about an hour, I used the next hour to research the answers I did not know. This helped out tremendously and I cannot stress enough how important it is to use the research tab on all of your simulations. Even if you finish the test early, keep on going through the research tab to find any answers that you may have questions on to squeeze out more points.

    BEC - Feb 2012: 80
    AUD - Feb 2012: 84
    FAR - Apr 2012: 78
    REG - May 2012: 90

    Thanks Becker!

Not using the research tab is probably the difference between passing and not for you. I know had some SIMS on my exam that I wouldn't have had a clue on if I didn't look them up. Make sure you use that next time and I bet you'll pass 🙂

I passed AUD first time. You must do at least 2,500 – 3.000 mcqs. It worked for me. For REG I did 4,000 mcqs and passed first time. For BEC I did like 1500 real attempts and failed with a 70, so for me pounding and understanding MCQs is key. BEC is really hard for me, not even sure how to restudy. I am starting from scratch which is nuts but I dont know what else to do.

    Reg 11/15/2011 - 80
    Aud 02/28/2012 - 81
    Bec 05/31/2012 - 78
Far 08/31/2012 - 83 Do you believe in Miracles, YES !!!

@Smj9825…this might sound crazy to you, you might want to focus more on MCQs. My report said I was weak on SIMS too but stronger in MCQs. I got a 81. So it's possible to screw up a little on SIMS as long as you do great on MCQs. I don't think there is a way to prepare SIMS because you can not predict the format of any SIMS. Just make sure you can a solid understand on the concepts. That way, you will do better on MCQs and might get lucky on SIMS.

Other advices here are great too, you might want to use the research tab for some of your questions…just make sure you have enough time for SIMS at least 1.5 hrs.

@CPA-Convertible, I scored stronger on MCQs, weaker on SIMs, and got a 72 🙁 I am switching to Yaeger next week

    AUD 81 (X4) Previous scores 59, 72, 72
    REG 80 (X3) Previous scores 59, 60
    FAR 75 (X2) Previous score 67
    BEC 79 (X2) Previous score 58

Divide and conquer different topics into manageable parts (whatever makes sense to you). If you know the material well, it should come together in the sims. The research tab helped me on the ones I had no clue about/not covered in review materials.

    R - 74;88
    A - 84
    B - 74;89
    F - no study = 67; May 15 = 87 & done

I barely passed AUDIT (73, 75), but practicing lots of MCQs and using the research tab on the SIMS may have been a key to my 75.

For me, Audit is really hard…b/c there is no wrong answer, but rather what's the best answer. Keep practicing, you can do it!!

You shouldn't be focusing so much on mcqs and sims, but rather spend your nailing down the concepts and incorporated nuances.

Most people do really well on mcq because you can pretty much use process of elimination (there's always at least 2 answers that are clearly wrong) and rely on your basic understanding of the subject. Also, it's just one question, so even if you get it wrong, who cares, move to the next. There's a good chance if it's an obscure question, you probably won't see anything similar to it again on the test.

With the sims, you're asked 5-8 questions with 5-10 different answer choices on a single topic. So if you don't know the concepts, you're screwed in two ways:

1.) The odds of you guessing the correct answer (12.5%-10%) is significantly lower than mcqs. Your chance of guessing right is at least cut in half.

2.) You're asked to answer 5-8 questions, instead of 1. There's 90 mcq's so if you miss one you're ok. If you don't understand an entire SIM question, you better know a good portion of the rest.

All the review materials are the same. All the practice mcq are the same. All the practice sims are the same.

I think heavy mcq practice is a serious waste of time, especially if you're short on time. Although mcq practice is more interesting and less dull, you're not going to have a thorough understanding of the topics as you would by mastering your study materials.

If there's one thing I've learned about knowledge based testing, the easy way is usually the most risky…

Thanks all of you. As Peanut, I got stronger or comparable on MCQs but I always got weakness on Sim. That makes me fail the test. Although it's just excuse English is not my first language so sometimes I don't understand clearly some of questions so although I studied a lot the test is always hard. Some times for me this is not CPA test it seems English test. (haha) Anyway this time I should pass the test so I will do my best as always.
