So… I am starting the second chapter of Audit (becker) today and came to the realization that instead of listening to Gearty read me the book, I can just read it myself and probably learn faster. I also found that sometimes that Gearty will skip a paragraph that is crucial for me to understand what hes talking about.. Then I have to pause the lecture, read the paragraph, and then reread what he just read to me.. This can’t be the most efficient method!

Did anyone try skipping the lectures and find it to be a better learning experience?

I found the lectures for FAR & REG a little more helpful as they went over more examples, calculations, etc.

I took audit for the second time back in August and I skipped the lectures and only read the book. Once I was done reading the book and taking notes and I worked the Ninja MCQs. My score increased by 17 points from the last time I took the exam but I was 9 points shy of the 75. It really comes down to understanding the material. I understood so much more when I just read the book versus the last time I studied when I focused on the lectures.

I listened to about 80% of the lectures in Becker and then couldn't keep watching them. My problem is that I feel the lectures move r e a l l y, r e a l l y slowly and my attention usually doesn't hold for that long, especially while trying to watch them at work or at home with a 9 year-old running around!

I think the two main points of the lectures are to clarify/explain the text, and also to point out what Becker thinks is most likely to appear on the exam (particularly the details that their homework is sure to cover).

So for the former, if you have no problem reading and comprehending, then I think that is a better use of your time than watching the lecture. But for the latter, I personally feel like it's worth my while to highlight and take notes on those details that they stress. But I take a shortcut and just open up the eBook on the Becker software and sort of highlight/take notes off that before I read a chapter, so that when I do get to reading it, I know what Gearty would have stressed if I watched the lectures.

I think it depends on how good the lectures are. I have Becker (too dry) for Audit, but Im using Roger. Since he actually teaches Audit, I think I would be lost if I don't follow his lectures after I read the book.
