AUD – FAR Connection

I feel like I asked this question somewhere before, but can’t locate it. Anyway, I always hear how the AUD exam has a lot of FAR related topics. Specifically, I have seen this comment a dozen times: “One of my questions was straight from FAR.” I understand that FAR is all about the financial statements and that AUD is all about auditing the financial statements so there is a clear connection between the two; however, after doing countless multiple choice questions I am still having a hard time understanding what people mean when they say that they had a FAR question on their AUD exam, etc.? Can someone give me an example of this?

I had 3 FAR based Sims on my AUD exam (second time), 3 FAR based Sims on my AUD exam (first time)…most definitely the reason that I did not pass both times considering my MC was stronger (as per the break down).

    FAR:75!
    AUD:69, 63, 73, TBD
    BEC:76!

As an example off the top of my head, a sim you could see on AUD that could be from FAR could involve a random financial statement where you're given a bunch of the information for it and need to fill in the rest.

For MCQs, you could be told that the beginning inventory was too high/low and asked what the effects are on net income, or inventory turnover ratio, etc. A variation on this one may have been in both AUD/FAR Ninja MCQs. I remember there being a couple of questions that were in both FAR and AUD Ninja MCQs.

In both examples the question is more FAR than AUD, but because of the overlap in the material the question topic is fair game for either exam.

FAR based SIMS can range from anything like JE, Adjusting JE, or understanding how a particular ratio affects the F/S etc. If you are using becker you may want to go over the A4 chapter with the financial ratios. So you should know the correlation of Inventory turnover (for instance) and the F/S what possibly caused the increase or decrease and what effect it has. Guess that is the best I could help!

I'm using Gleim and I have seen SIMs similar to the ones you've described; however, I have also seen a ton of SIMs that do not relate to FAR at all. Since it is such a common occurrence that people exclaim that they had a FAR SIM on their AUD exam, it it safe to assume you are more likely to see a FAR related SIM?

It really depends I would not say there wouldn't be a chance of having one. But I have had friends who said they never had a SIM related to FAR. However, I think you should have the knowledge since it is a fair game for auditors to have an understanding of financial information. Best of Luck!
