I started studying for the CPA exam in march bought the becker review course. Very respectable course and heard nothing but great things. Anyway, I studied for FAR for about 2 1/2 months and I took it in June, I received a score of 37. MIND BLOWED! very discouraged…i understood why I failed. I moved on, I studied for auditing since i never failed a college exam in that class how bad could it be? well I breezed through the MCQ with 70’s and 80’s and had a bit of trouble on the sims. But the weeks leading up to the exam on August 26th I felt prepared. On that date, I went in with high hopes and confidence and I left felt like I literally knocked the exam out of the ball park. I received my score today of a 40….WTF!!!! can someone explain to me if i’m straight up dumb or something? Because I had no problem in my undergrad with accounting and now AICPA is just bending me over…HELP!!!

I always get scared when I see posts like this. Good motivation to study.

Yeah I consider myself understanding the material if I'm scoring around 76-80 on MCQ's and i tackled the pre exam after the two runs to make sure I really understood the material before i actually took it. I certainly read the questions twice if not three times to fully understand what their asking me, everything your asking me is what i exactly did during the test day. I even had time to go back and review some of the questions I thought could have been the other answer. I really think its atmosphere at the prometric center or the AICPA really doesn't like me what so ever. its starting to make me upset to see everyone hitting 60-70s on their first try or even passing their first time. I certainly don't know whats going on at all!

Alright you score fine on the practice MCQs and read why you missed it if you got it incorrect. Do you have panic attacks or trouble focusing once the test starts at Prometric? Did you follow the random dudes advice on this message board to drink a beer right before the exam(not recommending anyone does that btw)?

Maybe, but maybe you are approaching it wrong. When I stray to far from my study methods. The things that got me through undergrad I struggle. Yes it is important to practice many multiple choice. But also it's important to drill the concepts and key terms into your mind. Before my last exam I was on the last day and worried I wasn't quite there so I decided to just make and drill notecards rather than take a practice exam. So study the way that helps you retain materials.

    Florida CPA!
    Took final exam 2/25/15.
    Sent in Application 3/12/15.
    Issued License 3/20/15.
Used CPA Excel solely for all exams.

hahahahah no I did not drink beer before the exam. I certainly don't have panic attacks not that I know of. Maybe its the trouble focusing part knowing that between me and the CPA is actually passing the test. But the AICPA really are tricky with their MCQ. But failing twice really makes me not motivated anymore cause i struggle. I've never really struggled in my undergrad and when I did come across a question i didn't understand on exams in undergrad I just went with my gut instinct which is not working in my favor against the AICPA questions. Maybe I should face the fact that I'm not going to be a license CPA and I'm 1 in a million people that spent thousands on a review course and retaking the exams and wasn't meant to be an accountant.

Someone might have already said this, but don't hop around on exams. Even though it's probably more annoying, stick with one until you pass it.

P.S. – No you are are not “retarded”. In fact, you have to have the equivalent of a masters degree just to sit for this thing. I would say that is far from what you said. Keep on keepin' on.

@thechapman, I don't have a master degree. I just have 150 credits undergrad..So you think I should keep testing AUD until I pass even though I failed FAR and AUD

You should be doing the questions at least 3 times each, even if you get them right the first time. and make sure you take a few weeks to review. If you don't continuously review, you're likely to forget a lot that you've already learned. You need to start practicing the mc's until the concepts are drilled in your head. I know that I've gotten 70-80% right, but after a few weeks, I could only get 50-60% right, because I forgot most of the material. Utilize progress tests in Becker to keep the information farmiliar. Learning it the first time is only half the battle
