So they’re not very clear about it on the AICPA website and when I called there were not very well-informed either. But here is ONE of the criteria for qualification if you’re already a licensed cpa.

Three years of financial (including internal audit) or management accounting experience in business, industry, or government

Question is: if you served as a Financial analyst role for a relatively small company of about 45 to 50 employees (no licensed cpa) does that count?

I had a question as well about work experience and I just emailed them (service@aicpa.org). They seemed a little clueless about the requirements also. So they put in a “service ticket” for me and after a week of research, I fortunately got the response I was looking for. Save the email and that's your fail safe.

My understanding is that you basically just check a box on the CGMA application and they really don't look into the experience you're asserting that you have at all. However, IF you ever get that phone call or you're randomly selected you can pull out the email and cover yourself.

Dont we have to fill out the experience form ? or they ask you to just click the box if you are qualified or not?

It looks to me like you just check a box but I haven't submitted it yet. This is what the application says:

Section 2: Experience Requirement

I have met one of the following minimum experience requirements to obtain the CGMA designation:

(Please check the primary ONE that applies)

• Three years of financial (including internal audit) or management accounting experience in business, industry or government.

• Two years of financial or management accounting experience plus one year in public accounting.

• Three years of financial/management accounting experience on a consulting basis.

• Three years in a management accounting role focused on the management and operation of an accounting firm.

Ah Ic…. so techically the question regarding the experience is kinda YES/NO question. We dont have to submit back up right away unless they call and ask for ..

I know this will incite some negative reaction, but I wouldn't bother with this CGMA. I can't imagine anyone will care about this once you are a CPA. Frankly, my experience is that employers in industry see it like this…

CMA (usually a consolation prize for those without sufficient accounting credits to sit for the CPA)

The CFA is the gold standard for investments/analysts. The CIA (I hold this) isn't nearly as challenging or respected than the CPA. These credential soups eventually just become ways for these organizations to separate you from your money. Sorry to sound cynical…save your cash and time.
