I passed a few years ago…I was too lazy at the time to take the CPA exam so I opted for something that almost looked like CPA. Sad but true. Was just wondering if there were any other wannabee CPAs that took this route too.

The only things in common are the pay, the fact that you need CE credits to maintain the certification, and prior work experience. It's strictly payroll accounting and HR crap. If you put in a focused month of studying it shouldn't be nearly as difficult although I barely passed and thought I was over prepared.

I think passing any certification is great and will help with your marketability. I'm not sure you can compare the pay though because CPAs are required for a wide arrange of positions and the pay varies significantly. Are you comparing the CPP pay to a staff accountant that requires a CPA or to a CFO that requires a CPA?

I am comparing a Payroll Manager 8+ years experience to a CPA with the same number of years. Usually payroll managers need the certification and at least 8 years experience. A CPA with that no. of years can be doing just about anything like you said. Typical positions like a Controller or Accounting Manager are in the same ballpark as the Payroll Manager. Of course this is generalizing but just saying. For a month of hard work and a few hundred bucks the value is there without the prestige.

I was previously a Payroll Manager and now a Controller and my pay is similar. Only difference is that my company is pressuring me to get licensed as a CPA too.

Gotcha. Makes sense. Go for the CPA! You won't regret it!
