Some may believe I am crazy, I take reg CPA my last part on this Saturday August 3, I am know reviewing, but I begin tomorrow in Law School.

I decided because I like to much taxes, bankruptcy, corporate law and the fact that my friends CPAs and lawyers tell me that the Bar exam is a piece of cake compared to the CPA.

The Law School after the CPA?

Is a good combination ?

I hope you thought about this more in depth before today, as you will likely spend tens of thousands over the next few years. In any case, it depends on your goals. If you're looking into tax law, business law, or other areas where having an above-average understanding of financial statements and accounting is helpful, then yes. If you're hoping to become a public defender, then probably not. Do you have a more specific question than the one you posted?

I think it couldn't hurt! I think that if I ever want to go for a career change I would aim to become a tax lawyer. I just don't see myself getting bored with taxes, and being a tax lawyer would provide enough of a change of pace. Of course, I don't expect to change for at least another 10 years from now if ever.

I recently completed the CPA exam, as in January of this year, myself. It has been a long term goal to attend law school as well. I applied to a local law school, took June LSAT, and will be starting Law School the middle of the month. I think it is a great decision. I really didn't and don't consult with a lot of people on how they feel about it, because it is a personal decision for me. You will find opinions for and against. I believe that a person should decide what they want for their life and career and make a decision after consulting with your significant other, and a higher power, not anyone else. I say congratulations and shoot for the moon, even if you miss you will still be among the stars.

I spoke with an attorney who is going through the CPA Exam this morning on the ninja hotline … she doesn't regret Bar/CPA route.

She said to do the Bar Exam first in a perfect world.

Law school is a horrible, horrible investment in this market. The NPV of a law degree over the “average” bachelor's degree student is basically net $0, and it's actually a negative return versus a licensed CPA. You're going to start your career in copious amounts of debt and it's unlikely that you'll ever make up for it in incremental earnings, especially adjusted for time value. If you REALLY want to be a lawyer, then go to law school. It is NOT the fast track to big money like it used to be, unless you go to one of the very top-tier schools. Only about 50% of law graduates are actually finding work AS lawyers within a year after graduation.

I would just echo what Wizards said. You have to be smart about your Return on Investment, and do your due diligence BEFORE you go. Its a life altering decision, particularly for those who aren't going on a full-ride.

Seems like a CPA + JD is useless unless you actually get experience using the CPA, i.e. working a couple busy seasons for tax/audit. If you get the experience, you should be very marketable.
