Because I missed studying so much and am slightly insane I decided to start the CIA exam earlier than originally planned. My office is ordering materials for me in the next day or so.

Any one else out there starting or studying for the CIA exam!?

I just got my CPA and I'm so tired of studying. I have the Gleim books sitting on my shelf in my office but I haven't wanted to look at them yet.

I heard that if you already have a CPA that you get a “pass” on one of the sections on the CIA exam. Does anyone know if that is that true??? If it is, then maybe I'll think about getting the CIA.

@ImaCPA – I know that is true for the old format, where they gave you a pass on Part 4. I'm not sure about the new format where there are only 3 sections. Should be able to find the information at The IIA's website.

    B - (08/29/2013) Passed
    A - (07/02/2013) Passed
    R - (10/17/2013) 73 - Rematch
    F - (05/29/2013) Passed

I think because the 4th part was essentially combine with the other 3 there is no longer a pass for having the CPA.

    Thanks BARF and smp73!

Yeah, I found it online. They're transitioning from old to new format halfway through 2013. So if you want to go through the old format, you still can as long as you do it within the 6-month transition window. Meaning…you can still apply for the “pass” on part 4 and take the old format sections 1-3 thorugh 2013. Ugh…I have the old format Gleim books so I probably should go through the old format but I'm about to give birth to my first baby. I don't think I'll have enough time to finish in 6 months.

Maybe I'll just go with the new 3 part format. Just so everyone knows, getting the “pass” on part 4 isn't free. It still costs $150, you have to fill out a form and send in proof. Then wait for them to accept your certification.

I think your old Gleim books should still be valid. I think they just condensed parts 3 and 4 into one exam, but I may be wrong.

So I just took the pre-test and based on my score the software suggests studying 28 hours total for the first part. 28 hours total…I think I studied 28 hours in 3 days once for one part of the CPA exam. They must be kidding.

A lot of you seem to be underestimating the CIA exam – It took me 6 or 7 months to pass all 4 parts and I did it in 9 attempts. The question structure is very different from the CPA exam, so you need to familiarize yourself with MCQ answers that look lilke “b and c, “a and c, “a, c and d,” etc. You will also know if you passed or failed before you leave the testing center; there are no numbers, just pass or fail. If you are a CPA and think you will breeze through this exam in 2 or 3 months, you may want to check yourself and give this exam a little respect, it is not near as easy as some have portrayed here and may become more difficult since it is going to 3 parts (that is just my theory, no evidence for that.)

    B -
    A - passed
    R - passed
    F - passed

JSBlamer is right, the exam should not be underestimated. However, if you put forth half the amount of effort into it as you put into the CPA, you will pass with flying colors.

@smp, 28 hours seems really low! I remember putting in 20 some hours and failing part 1. I then put on average 60 hours per part, and was able to pass them all without failing another exam. Words of advise – what's the difference between 28 hours and 60 hours (a couple days?)… go big

    B - (08/29/2013) Passed
    A - (07/02/2013) Passed
    R - (10/17/2013) 73 - Rematch
    F - (05/29/2013) Passed

@ Por F. I plan to go big. I would rather go big and pass than study a few hours and fail. I thought it was laughable that they suggested that amount of time to study. 🙂

So I am really starting to dive into studying today. I plan on sitting for the first part mid August. Taking the same general approach as CPA studying. Do not want to study over too long a period of time. I am also planning on the same general approach I used for how I study with these exams as I did with the CPA. It worked there so I think the general approach will work here.

I am also planning on doing a handful of 5k's this summer so my plan is to run Tuesday and Thursdays and not study as much those days. The weekends are flexible enough where I can study a lot and run.

Time to jump in, go big and pass this on the first attempt!

Anyone pass the CIA recently and want to sell their materials? I work 4 days a week (part time technically) and my company won't pay for them. Thanks!
