Because I missed studying so much and am slightly insane I decided to start the CIA exam earlier than originally planned. My office is ordering materials for me in the next day or so.

Any one else out there starting or studying for the CIA exam!?

My next goal is CISSP.

I thought of CIA too cuz my company supports Gleim CIA materials. If it can be done in 3 months, then I will give it a shot.

ALMI (Associate, Life Management Institute)
CISA - Passed in 2011, Certified in 2014

I am not currently doing the CIA and I am trying not to get too far ahead of myself until I get this certification completed, but I am considering both the CIA and the CFE following the CPA. I don't currently work in interal audit, but I really want to get into it and I wasn't sure if passing the exams for the CIA is something that would help with that or if it was something I should really wait to do until after I am already in internal audit.

I have heard good things about Gleim, but I have also heard really good things about the new Wiley materials do you know which ones you are going to use to study?

I am strongly considering the CFE once I am done with the CIA.

You need to have 2 years of IA experience to be licensed. I believe you can take the exams before you work in IA and then get your experience, but I could be wrong.

Either way I love IA. Great field to be in, if you ask me!

@kay – when are you starting the CISSP? The CIA exam does not seem nearly as daunting as the CPA!

I plan to finish the CPA exam in the beginning of next year (1/14 or 2/14- fingers crossed!) and then start studying for the CIA exam.

I agree that the CIA exam looks a lot easier compared to the CPA exam!

SMP73- what field are you in as an internal auditor? I am an internal auditor in retail.

I will keep you posted on the CIA exam compared to CPA exam. I can not imagine anything would be as obnoxious and time consuming as the CPA exam!

Good luck with the CPA exam. Its a lot of work but you can do it!

@jaredo155 – Honestly, once you get your CPA exams done, you can easily get into Internal Audit.CIA is just a plus after the moment you put the three letters, “CPA” in the back of your name.

@smp173 – Yea, CIA shouldn't take longer than 3months after all that we passed CPA exams. I ordered CISSP book, which should arrive today. I will probably start studying next month as I nowadays am busy preparing to move into a new house in 2 weeks.

I completed CIA a little less than a year ago, and the CFE a little less than six months ago. Any specific questions?

For CIA –> Definitely recommend Gleim, and only Gleim. The more questions you do, the better off you'll be. I think three months is pretty aggressive assuming you are working full-time.

I was going to do CIA but after looking into it, don't you need like two years of experience in internal audit? I work as a public auditor. It didn't seem a lot easier though.

@P or F what did you like so much about Gleim for the CIA did you just feel it did a really good job of covering the material? I only ask because I am using Wiley for the CPA and really like them, but I am not really familiar with Gleims materials.

Also on the CFE did you just use the materials from the acfe? If so did you find those were pretty sufficient? I have heard from others that exam is pretty straight forward.

Gleim's MCQ are great – on each part, I probably saw 10-20 questions on the actual exam that I had seen on Gleim. Also, their explanations on the MCQ make it so practicing with them will prepare you well for the actual tests. Side note, I'd probably dedicate around 60 hours of studying for each part. Regarding experience, I think most public accounting functions will count. I am in forensics, and that experience counted. What kind of work do you do?

CFE – Yeah, I used the materials provided by the ACFE. Don't bother wasting your time reading any materials. Just buy the MCQs and you shouldn't have any problem passing on your first attempt.

Also, for CIA – a master's degree or any graduate level degree (double check this) counts as one of the two years of experience.

random question: how did you guys get into internal auditing? Every entry level position i seem to come across needs some type of audit experience. im only an staff accountant so i only have general accounting experience.

I jumped from public accounting (governmental to be specific) to internal audit. The only experience I had was an IA internship when I was in college.
