Going back to public audit

I started at a public audit firm and work in internal audit now. I’m considering going back to a regional audit firm but don’t know if I should. Eventually I’d like to be a Controller or CFO and I don’t think my internal audit career would get me there. Thoughts anyone? Thanks.

What level did you leave audit at? I agree that you are in the wrong role for your target careers. The transition back is possible and you should consider it. I imagine that you would be able to pick up where you left off.

I did 2 years in audit and left as a staff. I'm a senior in internal audit now so I'd go back as a senior.

Is there any way you can transition to a staff/senior accountant role at your current job? If not, your experience and license should be able to move you to one at another company. I would only move back into public if I truly enjoyed it.

The irony is most of us are trying to get out of public accounting into internal audit roles so that we can get our lives back. But if you wish to come back into public, I would suggest a big 4 or regional firm and staying until manager. The exit opportunities are great!

I'm thinking regional firm and my end goal is the exit opportunity that you speak of.

The funny thing is – internal audit at Fortune 500 companies are just as bad or even worse than the big 4. My hours actually increased since I”be worked in internal audit.

If you left as a staff you might have a hard time getting a senior role in public, especially if you weren’t at a big 4 or regional firm before. Internal audit is an important area of an audit but it is not comprehensive of an audit. I also think it will depend on your experience in both roles. Have you applied anywhere?
