    Hey guys,

sorry to bother you (I know the release date is close and you must be nervous) but I have a quick question:

Is the CGMA designation really worth getting?

I qualified for it but since there Is no test it seems very vain. Although, they will incorporate an exam starting Jan 1, 2015…

    What do you guys think?

Seems like an AICPA cash grab if you ask me.

Personally, I am wary of any certification if the only barrier to entry is an annual fee.

For such a minimal cost, and no additional CPE requirements, we are having some of our current staff add the CGMA designation BEFORE the testing requirement comes into play on January 1.

From my experience, I'm seeing more Controllers and industry accountants add that designation. As our firm periodically is hired to act as interim controllers/CFO's, we think it wise to have a few qualified people on staff with the designation – purely from a marketing standpoint.

    YMMV.

    FAR - 83

IIA had a similar designation that I didn't go for prior to the testing requirement going into affect (CRMA). That seemed like a cash grab as well, but one of my more experience co workers said the CFE started that way. The CFE would be nice to have so I guess you never know what cert will take. If work will pay for it what are you out?

Yes I agree…what I don't understand why would the AICPA put a 3 years of experience in financial to be qualified? that seems very low experience for a designation if you ask me…

I was thinking to get it because as you said this certification can be worth it in the near future (while I will be getting more experience in accounting) and also I was thinking to study for the CMA so I have more reliability on my skills…

I didn't understand your question “what are you out?”

I didn't understand your question “what are you out?”

If you just have to fill out paper work, and work pays it really cost you minimal effort to get the certification. So it cost you little to see if it is worth having in the long run. I kind of wish I did the CRMA thing. I was just too lazy to fill out paperwork.
