CGMA?

Noticed that @Cujster posted about the CGMA in the Now That You Are Done… thread. Wondering what the benefits are to having this designation. Are there positions that require or desire a CGMA?

I looked up some information online and downloaded the application and it looks like there’s not much to getting the designation at this point. Simply fill out the application and send in $150 and that’s it. There’s not even a spot on there to describe your experience, just a check box saying you have it.

Starting January 2015, you’ll have to take a test to get the designation, so I was thinking of possibly applying for it prior to 12/31/14 and bypass the test altogether.

It's a silly designation, in my opinion. No exam, just pay and get certified. If I were interviewing a CGMA, I would want to know when they acquired the designation; I'm not a fan of hoarding abbreviations behind a name on a resume without substance.

Notice that it requires you to be an AICPA member….seems like a ploy to get people like me back into the AICPA (I dumped the AICPA this year and didn't renew their ridiculous $235 fee).

CMA is a real certification requested by some employers.

@Smith, I agree with you. When I was reading through the material I was thinking it might be something to pursue. Once I saw that the application was 2 pages and only required that you check off on experience without verification, I became skeptical. That's why I posed the question.

Does anyone think the designation might have a little more weight behind it when an examination is required? The examination will be a 3 hour exam based on a database of information you'll get 7 weeks prior to the exam. You'll have to answer questions based on information from the database and your best judgement/analysis of that information. The exam is going to be 3 hours.

It will gain some weight, certainly. The exam will help give it some worth.

That said, if you really want to learn about cost accounting and managerial accounting, go for the CMA.

If I start to see the CGMA on resumes, I will ask when the certification was obtained and will consider it a red flag if the certification was acquired before the examination period; it seems misleading to list a certification without any examination or actual knowledge.

Well while waiting on taking care of the CPA experience requirement (which I may or may not be able to get) I decided to go ahead to apply for the CGMA. Very easy process, experience doesn't require any attestation from employer, just yourself.

So now I am Scarlet Knight, CGMA. Hope to add CPA to it soon.
