You don't need to read the manual at all in order to pass the CFE exams. Just work through the questions in the software and you'll be fine. You don't need much time to prepare and I do think it's a good idea to use the CFE study time to distract yourself in order to reduce the tension from waiting for the CPA results. The materials can be interesting even if you aren't working directly in a fraud detection/deterrence area.

Obviously the CFE can't be compared to CPA in terms of time, effort or prestige but that doesn't mean it's a bad credential. At worst you can consider the CFE as a proof that you are conceptually more exposed to fraud knowledge than the average person which is hardly a bad thing. I have seen respectable job openings with the CFE mentioned (mostly next to the CPA).

I have the CFE credential and it's not bad to study for and pass. Like LongJourney said, it is best to use their study questions. If you go over them several times, you will find they are very similar to the actual questions.

I thought about going for this, but my professional experience does not seem to qualify. As a software tester, I tested on financial systems, but not sure if they'll accept that.

I am waiting on my last cpa exam score. I too am thinking about take the CFE exam. From what I can tell, it doesn't seem to be too bad at all.

Does anyone else have any advice about this exam?

I also have the CFE credentials. What was previously said is accurate — there is no need to read the manual. If you work the practice questions provided by the ACFE, you should have no problem passing.

    B - (08/29/2013) Passed
    A - (07/02/2013) Passed
    R - (10/17/2013) 73 - Rematch

I have the CFE credential, and I agree that the only preparation you need is the software. Just work though the sections just as they suggest in the software. The exam is just like the software prep course.

Also, I think that doing it in between CPA exams is a good idea. I actually think some of the stuff I learned from the CFE exam has helped on the CPA exam. You won't have to devote much time to preparing for the CFE exam.

I took forensic accounting as an elective last year and my professor basically followed the CFE study guide. Honestly, most of the stuff is common sense, and as long as you have a basic knowledge of business and finance you should be fine going in without having to read through all of that!

I'm not saying the material is easy or anything, but most of it is stuff you have probably already seen studying for the CPA or in other college courses
