How different are the schweser CFA materials from year to year? I am about to purchase materials for the December exam and am figuring out how much I should invest.

Schweser changes with how the content of the exam changes. For the most part a lot of it remains the same. If it was me, I'd be ok with using old materials and supplementing with the official books for anything new.

The materials will not be substantially different if you bought the most recent issue. I have a schweser CFA level 1 in 2011 and compared it with the 2014, the materials are almost the same for some topics.
