Almost done with the CPA exams….wondering about what to do next!

    Hey all,

I am about to take my last cpa exam and while this was a brutal experience, I have a feeling i’ll get bored and want to go for something else…. I already work at a Big4 and was wondering how much of a difference, career wise, does getting my MBA make? or possibly getting a JD? or any other certifications you can suggest.

I even thought about getting my real estate license or going to get an architecture degree, I don’t think I want to work busy season hours for the rest of my life so a more chill job is definitely what I would need especially one day when I have a family.

    Suggestions and advice appreciated.

So happy this journey is almost over 😀

I definitely wish I was one of those people who got all 4 exams done in 4 months, but unfortunately LIFE (being a newlywed, stress, adjusting to newlywed life and cpa exam study life, as well as starting a job with a Big4 which I am very happy about) got in the way, just happy that I am passing period!!

Maybe I should just work on living a healthier lifestyle for once: work out and attempt to make my tush tight again after all these hours of sitting on my ass for work and studying and enjoy not ever having to study again (unless it's for work) 😛

Do you really want to get an MBA or go to law school? You're probably going to take on significant debt and give up all free time for the next 3+ years of your life (if you count the time required to study for and take the GMAT/LSAT) with either option. That's not a “maybe I want to do this” proposition, especially not for someone who is married. Unless you really want to do it, have a good idea of how you would use the degree, and can get into a top program (or at least one that is well-respected in your area), I'm not sure it's worth the time or money.

There are a lot of accounting/finance related certifications (CFE, CFP, etc.) that are fairly easy to get for someone who already has a CPA license. If any of those would be useful for your career goals, they'll be a lot less painful than an MBA or JD.

I do that after studying. I figure doing shots is better than stabbing my eyes out

That's so funny, because I was wondering the same thing when I was almost done and then done. I was in school for 7 years right before I started the CPA exams, and then I did the exam thing, and I was like “what's next?” and looking for something to do. Then west coast swing dancing found me, so I've been working on that a lot. It's a pretty healthy addiction as addictions go.

kim, I LOVE dancing, and I absolutely love the group x classes at 24 hr fitness….have you ever tried? that's awesome that you found a very healthy addiction!!

I think I am leaning more towards maintaining a healthier lifestyle….because if I keep sitting on my butt for the next several years, my health is probably not going to be that great in 10+ years. I also did just about 6.5-7 years of school including the CPA and am sooo sick of it already… we will see in the future I guess if I decide to do something else.

I've already sacrificed enough of my time up until now, literally…. I should just enjoy it now…the only thing that makes me mad is people who are not professionals, have no idea/don't appreciate us CPAs…. now if I were to say I am a lawyer, everyone is like “wow” ha

oh well guess i'm not here to make everyone else happy but myself!!

Never tried 24 Hour Fitness, but I do belong to a fun women-only gym, and they have great group classes, like Zumba and strength training. Keeps me accountable much more than working out at home does!
