Hi, I was wondering if anyone has gotten or looked into getting a Masters in Accountancy from Western Governors University. I am looking to finish my exams and need my final 30 credits for my 150. I’d like to know what you thought of it and your experiences. It seems like a good concept since it is a cheap university and you pay for your time instead of by class. Thanks.

My firm has paid for a couple of people to get their BS in accounting at WGU… and I thought it was a good program. (Not sure about prices now but when I did this, it was about $3K a semester.)

Another option, which I like better if you're thinking about tax, is chipping away at a masters in taxation via something like Golden Gate University's program. (Maybe $3K a class?)

BTW I wouldn't necessary rush on completing that program either. Take enough classes to meet your hours requirements… and then when you get a job, talk with your employer about picking up the tab for the GGU program as part of your CPE.

I'm in their masters program right now and really like it. It helps with reinforcing what will be tested on the CPA. However, I see that you have already passed majority of the CPA exam so there is not really much you would be learning from the accounting program. Like SeattleCPA said, it'll probably be better to maybe do taxation or another degree. However, if you just need the units to be licensed I think its a good idea because you will breeze through the material for a small cost.

Thank you both for your input. I am basically just looking for the credits since I need 150 after passing. I am not in tax right now, I'm in non-profit, so I don't really think taxation is for me at this point.

Do either of you have input on the time it takes to finish all 30 credits for the MS? Is doing it in one semester possible while working full-time?
