Hello,

I have a dumb question. I was trying to apply for my state school MSA program and the person in charge (graduate coordinator) is giving me really hard time. She says I need to RETAKE Intermediate Acct I and II, Taxation, Audit and Cost Accounting (Managerial) classes to even be considered. It’s not even about the cost, although that too, it’s that my time is limited and it’s just nonsense anyway.

Has anyone experienced similar kind of obstacles? Does one usually try to contact dean or something like that?

I think it depends on where you took those courses the first time. Was it at another school? If so, it's possible that the credits don't transfer. If you took those courses at that same school, I would find someone else to talk to.

Some were from community college related to this school, it was actually transfer program, some from my undergraduate degree from another country. I think that might actually be a reason

Something that you may want to consider is testing out of those classes if your original classes end up not allowed. I'm not even sure this option is even possible but it may be worth inquiring about. Another idea is to possibly consider an online program, I'm sure there are some out there.

I could probably try CLEP, but it will only cover fin. accounting. That is an online program

Contact the dean? Lord no. First of all find out why you need to retake those courses (sounds like u THINK it is because they were taken in another country) but you don't really know for sure (maybe it was grades?). Honestly every masters program is going to have different criteria and many, if not most, don't care if your undergrad was from another country. So, I'd just try for different programs that admits people with your background (vs trying to change the admissions criteria at this school or take a bunch of courses to qualify).

My MSA program required a minimum 3.0 (“B”) in many undergrad accounting courses. So, it might not be that she's giving you a hard time, it may be because the student course registration system won't even allow you to register for a course if you don't have a certain prerequisite grade.

I would simply ask her what the underlying reason is of why she is saying you must retake these courses.

true, Anonny, I could try different one, I am considering few, but this one is cheaper. I was kind of thinking that state schools are little more flexible with this stuff.

All my grades for these were A's, except for Audit, that was B+. They consider them intro level because it was from community college. My foreign transcript has plenty of accounting classes, they just have slightly different names. I had to talk to 3 different people ones trying to explain that “Global Economy” and Macroeconomics is essentially the same thing. I believe it's a matter of judgement but some have already made up their minds

Bobcat87, my grades were not great, but accounting ones were always much better, it is definitely higher than 3.5, so that shouldn't be a reason
