M.S. in Accounting vs MAcc?

    Are these interchangeable? Assuming one has an M.S. in Accounting, could one for example use MAcc on a business card, as they are essentially the same degree? Is there a difference?

    I’m a little unclear and wanted to ask…thank you!

    No, they are not the same thing. I think the biggest difference is that the MAcc is accredited by the AACSB, while the MS is not. In looking at the courses in the MAcc closest to me, there is no real difference in courses required. Another difference (at least with the MAcc I am looking at) is that reviewing for/taking the CPA Exam is built in.

    But, no, you cannot use the two interchangeably.

    I not sure about that… pretty sure they are interchangeable.

    MS accounting can be accredited with AACSB

    Yes, I also think they are interchangable/ essentially mean the same thing to everyone. I wouldn't change the degree on a business card cause there is no point & its not true (even if they mean and/or are exactly the same thing). Why would you? – there is no benefit in doing so.

    Also, my MAcc does not have a CPA review built-in.

    The idea that MS in Accounting means it isn't accredited is 100% wrong. My degree is MS in Accounting. As far as I know, they are interchangeable, but if there is a difference, it isn't that.

    Hmmm, can somebody tell me,then, what MAcc stands for? I thought these degrees were similar. And MS degrees have special AACSB accreditation too.

    DONE!

    I didn't say that an MS isn't accredited (I have one!) I didn't think that you could have a MAcc that wasn't AACSB accredited (which is in addition to regular accreditation.) I see that is wrong, so I'll be watching to see what the difference is.

    I still don't think you can use them interchangeable – they are two different degrees.

    @ReneeNC gotcha. Yeah I misunderstood.

    I wouldn't use them interchangeably either – I'd call it whatever my university calls it. I just thought they were essentially the same, but I could be wrong. I doubt it makes a difference to employers anyway.

    Macc= master in accounting

    MS accounting = master of science in accounting…

    Seem to be the same thing…

    Unless you have MS tax which would be Master of science in taxation.

    I've randomly checked the PAR report and noticed both MAcc (MPA) and MS degrees in the top 25 list; so, I don't understand why there is a difference in the “naming” of these degrees. After all, we can't compare apples to oranges (aka compiling a top 25 list out of incomparable things).

    They aren't the same thing. Just like a B.B.A is not the same as a B.S.

    Yes, they might be on the same playing field career and qualification wise, but you shouldn't use them interchangeably. Like someone else mentioned, just use what your school called it.

    Mayo, BBA, Macc

    Okay got it, it was just an academic question (pardon the pun). And yes, people put that on business cards…I had an old VP of operations that did that just because it meant he was less likely to get BS'd by people in accounting even though he was no longer in that particular field lol.

    Thanks for the answers!

    Not an answer but slightly related :

    I think most people find it tacky to put “MBA” or “MSA” etc on a business card. It isn't a title or designation.

    It isn't awkward lol to place MS accounting or MA Acc on your card….USF faculty would include those designations all the time…i would too if i had a PHD.

    Like someone mentioned, they are different.

    For example, back when I was pursuing math…you can go for a

    BS Mathematics = Bachelors of Science in Mathematics

    BA Mathematics = Bachelors of Arts in Mathematics

    The variations in this would be based upon specific courses taken….in my case if I were to take like 2-3 more science classes beyond the basic core than I would technically have a BS Math. I guess for me the science aspect mean you went the extra mile in a sense.

    So to answer your question, no you cannot use them interchangeably. Yes they may “almost” be exactly the same but technically they are not.
