I passed all sections of the CPA exam a little over a year ago. Right after I completed CPA exam, I started taking classes at a local community college to meet 150-units education requirement for the CPA license (I was short by 25 units at that time). At the end of May I should be have exactly 150 units, thereby meeting ALL of the requirements to be a CPA. I am very hopeful that I will be a CPA this summer!
Starting this June (for the first time in forever) I am going to have a ton of free time on my hands. I am considering getting a master’s degree in taxation. I started volunteering for VITA this year. This has been my first experience with tax, but I’m really like it. Sometime in the next few years, I would like to start a tax preparation business on the side. That’s why I think that having a degree in taxation will be very handy.
I mentioned to a couple of my coworkers that I am considering getting a master’s degree in taxation. One of them practically fell out of her chair laughing, while the other flat out ridiculed the idea. My coworkers implied that getting a masters in taxation is a waste of time and the dumbest idea ever. I work as an auditor for the government, so a masters in taxation will not benefit me at my day job. However, it will be very handy should I decide to start my own business. What do you guys think? Will I be wasting my time if I decide to pursue an advanced degree in tax? Is there a cheaper way to become more knowledgeable about taxes (i.e. a certification in tax)?
