Hi Everyone,

I would really appreciate some help. I don’t know what to do!

I’m looking to start grad school in Spring of 2013. I still have not taken my GMAT because of CPA studying. The deadline to apply for the Macc program is 11/1 but scores need to be submitted by then. That would give me about 21 days to study for the GMAT since the scores take about 20 days to get to the school. Would that be enough time if I do about 2-4 hours per weeknight and 6-8 hours a day on weekends?

They have a masters in Forensic Accounting program as well. The GMAT can be waived since I have passed more than 2 sections of the CPA exam. Would this be viewed with the same weight as the Macc? I’m currently working in a REIT as an accountant but I want to become an auditor.

What do you guys think I should do? Any response would be greatly appreciated.

I say do your research on the programs and apply for the best one.

The GMAT shouldn't be a huge concern. You don't need a very high GMAT score to get into most programs. If you've passed 2 sections of the CPA exam, you are more than capable of scoring high enought to be accepted into either of those programs.

I took the GMAT in 2010 with no studying and scored a 650. Which is not great, but a 475 was all that was required by my university. Anything above a 700 is awesome.

IMO, the GMAT is nothing but a glorified ACT exam.

I am not sure which degree would carry more weight, so I cant give you any advice there.

From what I've seen, neither carry much wait in the real world. Potential employers that I've met are only concerned about having 150 credits. If you're thinking of looking outside of accounting in the future, then an MBA is much more meaningful than a MACC.

I don't know if that is always the case. Probably depends on the program. In my macc program we took a mix of acctg and MBA courses. MBA courses were our electives and our acctg courses were offered as electives to them ( although they tended to avoid them out of fear :)). Also, we tended to do better than them in their MBA courses too. Honestly a lot of macc programs are macc MBA hybrids. Also 1st yr MBA courses are usually pretty basic courses giving them a business background that maccs got in undergrad.

I agree with MeaDebitum to an extent. As someone just entering the workforce, neither of those degrees are going to get you a better job or more pay than someone with only a Bachelor's degree. However, once you have 2-5 years of experience under your belt and are in line for supervisory and management positions, I believe either degree will give you an advantage over your peers.

Because I needed additional credits to earn the 150 hours, I went ahead and got my MaCC. I am not reeping any benefits from my grad degree yet, as I've just completed my 1st year as an auditor. But I do count on my degree being an advantage and an asset in a few years.

I am currently in the pursuit of my Masters in Accounting at the moment. I actually have two more terms to go. I am attending NOVA Southeastern University in FL… They have a really great program, you may have the option of online classes, hybrid classes (online/on campus), and all on campus classes. I did not have to take the GMAT which was a big YES! for me. Also, the school itself is pretty recommended in South FL.

I live in the Virgin Islands with no Universities offering a Masters in Acc, so it was a great option for me.
