I’m 30 and thinking about studying for GMAT after my CPA exams.. partly to fulfil my 150 hours but hoping that it will give me an edge/open up some doors too.

How old are/were you when you started/finished your graduate program?

I agree with some of you who said MBA would be more beneficial after some work experience, not right out of undergrad. since I will be working full time, any masters would take at least 2 years for me. that means i will be 32 by the time I finish..that's a little too old to be competing against youngsters for Big4 associate positions.

for those of you who have masters/MBA – are you satisfied with your ROI?

I have never done Public accounting. Been working in corporate accounting while getting bachelors (took 10 years) and Macc (took 2 years). Getting Macc helped me move up the chain. I'm a Senior Corp Accountant now. Macc or MBA totally worth it. Plus I find companies respect all ages (younger and older). Definitely worth the extra time for masters. My advice is to not get too hung up on Big 4. So many opportunities in accounting,

I started my masters program right after my bachelors but there were people of all ages. 30 is probably just about the average age I'd say, you definitely aren't too old.

@cpaismyonlywayout, I'm thinking about pursuing an MAcc and am planning a career change as well (from tax to audit), although I plan to do this full-time. I realize you plan to do this part-time, but if you are indeed interested in the switch, maybe you could check if the grad schools offer networking and career opportunities that you are interested in.

@Emkb2623 – Nice to hear that you're doing well and happy. took you 12 years to accomplish while working full time, that's crazy, you have my respect. do you think your promotion was based on accounting knowledge you gained from the program or the just the level of degree that separated you from your peers?

@ak thanks! how do you feel about the return on your investment?

@splinter1643 – Thanks for your input. Yes, networking/being in reach of public firms through school career event is definitely one of the benefits of going back to school. I was considering MST and go tax route. what made you want to pursue a career change from tax to audit? What's so bad about tax?

Hi everybody. I passed the exams in Dec and after 3 months of detox I was thinking of how to go about getting my remaining 20 credits to get licensed as a CPA. I am 23 and have been working for 2 years in financial accounting at a small local firm. I could do a masters but was thinking of going the quick and cheap route through CLEP exams. Did anyone out there do it this way or know of anyone who did? Is it really worth the extra time and money to do an MBA or Macc?

I know a girl who had her bachelor's degree at 18 from doing the CLEP program…she got her Masters in Biomedical Statistics at 20 and just started her PhD.

@CPAismyonlywayout: I just feel that an MST isn't for me since I've already had a couple years of tax experience already. In tax, I learned a lot about tax laws, ways an organization might be able to save on taxes, analyzing a tax return, and some consulting skills. But I'm pretty interested as well in figuring out how an organization determined that their book income was exactly as they reported it on the FS or the tax return, which is why I'll hopefully be switching to audit.

cool! I myself got about 40 credits from CLEPs to get my BS but that's amazing! I am just hoping that the CPA license is enough without a graduate degree.
