Hello all. I’m starting to research the CMA exam. I’ve recently completed my CPA and apparently I feel like I haven’t suffered enough, so I’m considering a CMA as well.

I’m a little confused as to if what I do at my job will meet the work experience requirements. I have a pretty standard private accounting job. We have a month end close where I prepare and upload journal entries. I also prepare account reconciliations and prepare and analyze reports that go to upper management.

I believe I would qualify as I definitely do financial analysis although its maybe 30% of what I do. If you are an accountant are you pretty much assured of meeting the requirements or is it more stringent than that?

There is a form to fill out, and IMA will pre-approve your work experience for you. It might actually be a requirement for CMA candidates, but I don't remember.

You apply to take the test. As soon as you have an account and are registered to take even one section you can complete all the other requirements at any time (ie submit your transcripts, get your experience approved etc). On your profile there will be sort of a check list which will update as you complete the requirements. You can elect to submit your experience before even registering, however its a bit hit and miss. If they can't match it to a profile/candidate you won't always hear back. I applied and paid for both sections, then submitted the additional forms- that way once you pass you get your CMA certificate/license number pretty much immediately. Also the IMA gets totally swamped after score release because all the candidates which have passed submitted their stuff.

I tell all my CMA students to submit all the info as soon as they set up an account.

From what you describe your experience is VERY likely to qualify, and I would be shocked if they turned you down.
