Would buying a car from a client affect independence?

I’m going to verify this with a partner but figure I’d get thoughts from on here first.

I’m going to be going on an audit of a client. My parent’s bought the car I now drive from there in 1999. Does this impact my independence?

Also, would my intent to buy a car from there in the next few years affect independence? I may not even buy one from there at all but figure I should find out anyways.

You're currently studying for AUD in a couple of weeks? You should have this answer at your fingertips.

Your parents bought a car there 14 years ago. No, doesn't affect your independence.

You want to read up on what does and does not affect your independence.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

Nope. As long as it's not a Bentley and you got it for $10.

    Licensed Florida CPA:
    B: 71, 73, 79
    A: 83
    R: 78 (expired), 77
    F: 74, 74, 80

    It's finally freaking over.

Do you think if you were auditing Wal-Mart you would be prohibited from shopping there?

@bySept It would make a great excuse to tell my wife why I can't shop there anymore.

    AUD: 8/17/2012
    REG: 4/29/2013
    BEC: 7/8/2013
    FAR: 1/16/2014

    @red lol.

If it was a custom shop that made and sold this one car all year (and probably if it was more recent), that would affect independence, because you would've been their sole customer for a year. But assuming this is a car lot that sells a lot of cars every day, then especially with it being 14 years ago, you're fine! However, if you were looking to buy a car from them during the term of the engagement, you would want to set up safeguards to be sure there's no special prices going on (like buy from a salesman who doesn't even know you're on the audit).
