**Will this lead to my offer being rescinded? - Page 2

I got a job offer for a Staff Auditor position. I had a buddy of mine who said he could make my resume outstanding so he changed my original job title (at previous employer), from SCIS Reporting Expert to IT Project Auditor.

In my job, I performed some duties that an IT Auditor/Data Analyst would perform, like validity checks and substantive tests.

During the interview, I explained that I was a Data Analyst but I was later given IT Audit duties.

Question is, when the background check is finished, is the job title issue something that could cause the offer to be rescinded? Also, how long does the average background check take?

    Thanks.

@fuzyfro89, it's too late now. I filled out the application and submitted it to the Director of Audit with the title of Project Auditor. The job agency that was fixing me up with the previous job initially told me that my title was “Supply Chain Information Systems Reporting Expert”, and others called me a “Project Administrator.” When I started work someone said I'm probably a “Reporting Analyst,” though I was doing those duties plus a heck of a lot of IT Audit. So you're right, they might be more concerned that I worked there, and that I worked in Information Systems like I said I did. This will be a long week.

@ Lilla, they do like me a lot because they said that they rejected someone who had 3 years of experience more than I do, because they really like me. And the Senior Auditor told me that the company usually interviews people twice (like they did her), but the VP of Audit said she doesn't need to interview me because of the strong recommendations from the other staff.

I just contacted the job agency that had gotten me my old gig and asked them to let me know my official title. Should I then contact the company that gave me an offer and tell them about the title confusion?

I would contact HR prior to them performing the background check and all that formal stuff and let them know your offices title was different. Once they hear the mouthful of your official title, no one should be surprised you didn't out that on your resume. It is impossible to know what that means.

@Kricket thanks! If I could go back in time I would probably not let my friend convince me to change the title. I know that getting into Audit/Finance requires someone who's particularly trustworthy and honest. Fingers crossed, and thanks for your input.

-Just to update, I've just completed my drug testing. I believe I'm going to be cleared to start soon, so it appears that the title discrepancies are not material.

For me personally, I am an Assistant Manager in Financial Accounting for a company in Industry, we are publically traded. If I know of something put on a resume that is untruthful or a flat out lie, its a big red flag. I have had a lot of candidates that I liked but then when the background check came through, a lie would dissuade me. If you lie on your resume, how is your work performance.

I have also had to work with people who lied on their resume and got in higher position than I was in, they could not perform and maintain their duties, so we all suffered. Needless to say they didn't last long.

All in all, if you want to highlight something to be important, I care more about duties and responsibilities than I do titles. It would be better to list those items as some of your duties. Just a thought! Good luck!!

You'd be surprised at how often employers do NOT verify details on your resume. They may give one or all of your references a call, but from my experience it's fairly uncommon to have resume details confirmed in that manner. They want to make sure you get a solid reference and that your references aren't bogus.

It's unfortunate because it allows for exaggerated resumes and it makes honest applicants feel like they need to exaggerate as well to even the playing field.

just because you can get away with it doesnt make it right. i would much rather play on an uneven playing field then falsify my resume….it is literally (chris traeger voice) me representing myself in one page.

Interestingly enough, i've never had a title…so I just make them up. I'm currently a Systems Analyst since that's the closest thing that describes what I do.

@ taxman – I agree completely. I have seen first-hand the havoc wrought by people who have deceived their way into positions which they're unqualified for. It *literally* makes me embarrassed for them. Everyone around them is fully aware of their incompetence. I would never want to find myself in that position.

@ tomq – I never had an official title at my old job (small accounting firm, didn't like hierarchies). I simply gave myself the title commensurate with my responsibilities, which I believe is wholly justified in that situation.

According to the HR Department of the new company, I have passed my background check as well as my drug testing and I am cleared to start work.

The issue of the job title is irrelevant, according to them, because they have confirmed that I performed the duties that are performed by a person that holds the title of Internal Auditor, as has been verified by my previous employer's HR department.

Therefore, title does NOT matter, but grossly inflated titles like a janitor calling himself a professor, will lead to the offer being rescinded.

Thank you for your support everyone! My conscience is clear!
