Ok, this might be a crazy question but do you think a public accounting firm is willing to take a volunteer to prepare taxes/do audits? Or do you think this is better suited for a smaller firm? Or is this not allowed?

I'm not sure about a firm, but there are organizations that have volunteers do taxes for elderly and needy individuals. You are bound to find one in your area with a little research.

VITA takes volunteers every year for people to help low income taxpayers with simple 1040s do their taxes for free. Just do a google search for VITA program in your area.

It never hurts to offer your volunteer services to a firm.

It shows initiative, and I heard a story recently of someone who offered to do that and got a job out of it.

You're basically talking about an internship, but self-created.

Go for it!!

I believe if you offered your free services to enough firms, someone will take advantage of it.

Great way to get experience AND make new contacts.

You'll come across as desperate, which is never a good thing.

In some states, it could be illegal (and hence ‘not allowed'.)

It could potentially work for tiny tiny firms in some states. For most firms though, they'd roll their eyes and tell you to apply for their actual paid positions. Especially bigger firms where half the candidates get turned down because their interviewers can smell the ‘i'll do anything you want me to do, i'll give up a limb for this job' desperation all over them. Confidence is key.

Don't do that to yourself, have some confidence or patience.It's not that serious

When you start off willing to do anything, that's actually a negative. Then when you start yourself off on that footing, it's not even something you can put on a resume because it'll bring your marketability & salary way down.

Professionals don't give away their services unless the recipients are needy.

Do a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program or try to volunteer for a small not for profit. You'll be able to open a few doors that way for sure.
