Why would some people work hard to get a CPA and then let it lapse?

    My neighbor and cousin both claim that they passed the CPA exam on their first try and became CPAs when they were young, but they let their license lapse because they didn’t want to work in public accounting anymore.

    I don’t get it. Getting the CPA certification is extremely difficult. Why would some people do all that work and then let it lapse?? Seems like such a waste of time and money, don’t you think?

    My guess would be membership fees and CPE credits. I guess if you have no use for the designation, there is no reason to continue putting time and money into it.
