GoVPIParticipantI had that as an interview question.
My answer was job opportunity and then job security. Behind engineering, I think this is one of the degrees that does pay off only going to school for 4 years.

HeartsMimiCPAParticipantSame reasons. Job security and opportunities. I also found learning accounting challenging but it held my attention
I got my BA in economics with no real plan after college. I ended up in insurance, a year a later the company laid off about half of us. I knew I never wanted to be in that position again. CPAs are needed for various things and even if I find myself unemployed again I can always work for myself.

RedSoxFan77MemberAfter working in the financial industry for a few years (pre-bachelor degree), I decided to get a certificate in accounting. Well, I had a fantastic teacher in Financial Accounting I and II which made me really interested so I decided to continue through and get a Bachelor's in accounting. Ever since, I've wanted to work in the accounting field. Had my financial accounting class experience been as terrible as my cost accounting class experience, I probably would have chosen finance or computer science.

smith65MemberI wanted a skill that would commoditize myself. Everybody needs accounting services yet there is a limited resource for the skillset.

AnonymousInactiveComing from an economically disadvantaged household, it was important to me to make sure whatever major I chose would be well worth the investment of student loans. On more general terms, I wanted to LEARN how money works so that I can a) minimize the risk of it being an issue for the duration of my life, and b) help others who struggle with financial management.
Now that I realize how bountiful the career opportunities are in this field, I also want to reach out to other economically disadvantaged demographics at the high school level to raise awareness about the field of accounting.

AnonymousInactiveI was told all through highschool I should become an accountant cause I was good at math. My image of an accountant was sitting in an office with little windows doing arithmetic all day, and that didn't inspire me at all. I learned to add and subtract in 1st grade and didn't really want to spend the next 60+ years doing that!
In college, I majored in a few different things – Education (big time flop), Management Info Systems (basically computer science and Bus Admin had a kid, and it was MIS), Marking/Management/Accounting triple-major, and then switched schools to a school that offers a Bus Admin degree, but you have to pick an “Area of Study” within it. I considered “Entrepreneurship”, but decided that “Accounting” would be useful if I ended up being an entrepreneur, but would also open more doors for working in someone else's business….whereas Entrepreneurship would pretty much just work as an Entrepreneur. So, despite my highschool aversion to the field, I picked Bus Admin: Accounting, thinking I could always just leave off the Accounting part if I didn't want to do accounting.
Then I took some accounting classes, and realized that accounting is much more than being a bean counter in our current day and age. I had considered doing something like law because I really liked critical thinking and problem solving but I didn't want to go to Law School and I didn't really like the idea of presenting in court all the time, fighting for things I didn't believe in as often as things I did believe it. Well…I discovered that accounting could provide the critical thinking and problem solving challenges that I craved, could make use of my lifelong love of Excel (seriously…earliest memories of playing in Excel were when my age was a single digit), and that it involved a lot more than addition and subtraction…and it could involve interacting with people on occasion as well. 😉
Now I'm a CPA and I think that accounting has been a great fit career-wise. My only concern is the lack of work-life balance that seems common once you get into the career, but I'm still optimistic that I can find a happy medium. I'm not sure what that will look like for me, but I'm hanging tight for the ride while I find it. 🙂 Given that I am in private accounting, I think my chances are much greater than for those who are in public!

teeteenounoucheMemberThe career center tests kept coming up with accounting no matter how many I took, so I gave in and went with it. Best non-decision I ever made LOL…

thechapmanMemberThis may sound like BS because it's the answer I used in interviews, but it's the truth. I'm interested in business and if you can do accounting, you can understand anything else in business; that doesn't work for any other business major.

mla1169ParticipantGot into an accelerated engineering program (30 months) at Northeastern University. Decided I wanted to get married and have babies instead (my parents were LESS than amused).
Ended up as a bill collector at Sears (good times, NOT!) then went on to do A/R at a service company. After I got divorced I decided I needed a degree to do better for my kids and my employer would only pay if it was related to my job.
So, accounting it was!
