I’ve heard that the NIU.edu correspondence course offers more hand-holding than all the other programs. Is that true??

I’ve always done well in school, but this self-study format is not working for me at all. I need an instructor to teach me the info. It takes FOREVER to figure things out for myself.

I feel like I was thrown into a deep pit of MCQ’s and told to swim my way out. I’m drowning and I need a better way.

Is the NIU way more manageable?

I've taken it for all four parts of the exam. I've passed the first three parts first try. I really like their layout. They break down the topics into multiple books from 50-190 pages (it depends on the section and topic). The lectures go over most of the material in the books. Then, you reread the books and answer the MCQs in them. Next, I take the online exams. After finding my weaknesses, I reread the books and take the exams one final time before the actual exam. They have videos for some of the subjects and most of the profs do a good job keeping it interesting. They have a lot of neat ways of remembering things.

I was nervous taking the exam since I failed out of school and attended maybe 60% of my accounting classes. However, with the NIU CPA review I have been able to pass 3 (hopefully 4 on Thursday) sections of the exam first try within 4 months.

Personally, I learn better from learning the concepts than tons of MCQs. They do have a lot of released questions but they really teach the concepts well and it works for me.

NIU CPA Review Correspondence is awesome!

I passed all four sections on the first attempt

    Thanks, mmcgrad1 –

Please forgive me for all the questions below. I'd love feedback on this stuff…

3 exams in 4 months, really?!? How did you do that? Are you studying full-time?

Is the program THAT good that it takes you through faster? I thought most people do one test in 3 months, and my own progress is embarrassingly much slower than that. That's why I'm considering other options.

Did it feel like you were learning in a class? With support of an instructor? I'm looking for more structure and support.

So, even though you learn better focusing on the concepts than on the MCQ's, did you still do a ton of MCQ's?

What resource did you use for MCQ's – only the NIU online database?

I heard that they recommend that you buy Gleim. Is that a requirement of the program or optional? (I don't want to buy Gleim if I don't have to)

Did the distance learning program allow you to feel the same (or close to) the level of support as if you were in the classroom? And, are the instructors responsive and patient when you send them questions via email? (I tend to ask a lot of questions, or at least, much more than the average person)

Basically, does it tell you – do this, then that, and you will pass? If I can do that, AND pass each test in a couple months each, then that sounds golden!

But, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is, huh?
