I currently work as a supervisor at a large regional CPA firm. I’m thinking about looking for a job in private accounting in the next year, as I don’t see myself spending my life in public accounting. Based on my review of hundreds of job postings, it looks like I would qualify for either of the following types of positions: senior accountant at a large publically traded company (fortune 500) or assistant controller at a mid-size privately held company. I am wondering if anyone with experience can offer any advice on which would be the better position for my career in the long term? I feel that the senior accountant position with the large company may open the door for more posibilities with other large companies in the future, but I don’t know if it will look bad on my resume to “step down” from a supervisor position to a senior accounting position? Will it be hard to move back up again? On the other hand, if I were to go for an assistant controller position at a smaller company, I think I would probably have to spend the rest of my career working for smaller companies, as I feel it would be much harder to move from a smaller company to a fortune size company the higher up the career ladder I go. Any thoughts?
