I took this job (Construction accountant at a small business) right out of college because I needed a job pretty badly. I became responsible for all day-to-day A/P, A/R, Quickbooks, Bank Recs, J/Es, financial administration, payroll, etc. This all pretty much happened within 6 months of employment. I’m also a notary. I’m planning on having all 4 exams passed before the end of the year. I’ll need 1600 hours experience and 27 more education credits

I’m coming up on two years employment and I’m only making $15/hr. I’ve been actively looking elsewhere but I’m a little rusty when it comes to job hunting. The last straw came when I heard my friend who is still in college was making more at her internship at a medium sized accounting firm than I do currently -_-.

I realize I don’t have the greatest resume, but I want to get into the finance/accounting world and start moving up!

Anyone have suggestions or have been in a similar situation?

Tcohle, I know I have mentioned that my situation is similar to yours. 25 yrd is very young!! I am 29 and some of my classmates are over 30 when they graduated. I even make less than you make. I have worked with external auditors from a regional firm and they are very nice and easy to talk to. You should try mid-size, regional or even local firms. Don't limit yourself to big firms. There's always better choices if you look at it in different ways.

@AZWildcat32 I am interested in governmental positions, but I don't know much about. There's assistant auditor positions open in my area. I don't know if I am qualified. Can you please give some info?

@zyx11 Governmental positions usually post positions on their websites. Try looking at your state jobs website, then look at any counties, cities, community colleges and universities. There are tons of accounting/auditing positions out there. I would recommend an auditing position, if you can find any.

It's all about building your resume, and there are many ways to get your foot in the door. Like I recommended to Tcohle, I prefer the indeed.com website for comprehensive searches. You can just type in “state auditor” or “city accountant” or something similar. Most government jobs list the starting salary range right on the job posting so there's no mystery and they mostly all have great benefits.

Hey AZWildcat, I know this is kind of a stretch, but could I send you my resume for you to look over and give me a general idea of which jobs I should be applying for?

Well I found it through either glassdoor.com or indeed.com….i forget which. But another way I found companies was looking for the “Top 100 companies to work for” and starting from there. I would recommend updating your LinkedIn too…that's how this cpa firm's HR got a hold of me.
