What’s the longest someone can go unemployed in DFW or Houston? Assume they have passed the cpa exam, have no experience, no network, below a 3.0 gpa, little to no volunteer or extracurricular activities, they only look for jobs that meet CPA work requirements (supervised by a CPA; doesn’t have to be public accounting), and they are actively searching 40+ hours a week (calling, emailing, handing out resumes, going to functions to network, etc.)?

And what would be a likely time range without a job with the same facts above?

    inb4 forever.

Need more details. Did you graduate in May and decide to take the exams before working? What school did you graduate from and what was your major (I'm assuming Accounting)

Searching 40 hours per week is nice, but what's important is a solid resume and being personable.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

You seem to be very good at pointing out your negatives.

You don't have experience, you don't have a high gpa, you don't have extracurriculars, and you don't have a network….

    So… what do you have?

Until you can answer that, throwing hours upon hours at the job hunt will do you no good.

No-name school, but AACSB certified. Graduated almost 3 years ago, but took additional hours for cpa; about 2 semesters. Studied for Exam after that and finished last part early summer this year.

What else do I have? Nothing. Hopefully I'll be employed as a tax preparer this season. Lots of gaps in my school, huge gap in work. Graduated older. Slacked off half my adulthood, including a lot of school.

    What are my options?

You are the type of person I don't want to become. I'm heading down the same path. At least I try to gain some work experience/volunteering. Start low is I what I suggest. At least you can get some references and have something better to put on your resume. At the moment, I guess you don't even have 1 reference? I would also like to hear better ideas.

    FAR - 62 (10/2/13), 50 (5/30/14)
    AUD - 73 (10/30/13), 66 (5/6/14)
    REG - 69 (4/8/14)
    BEC - 66 (2/27/13), 73 (4/21/14)

The only thing you can do right now is look for a job. Join the Accounting Associations, they do networking, sign up at a temp agency, make a list of cpa firms in your area, walkin or make appointments to present a resume.

You finished school, you passed the exam. Now it is time to get to work. Start as a tax preparer if you are comfortable with that, but start somewhere. you won't be unemployed long if you simply start looking.

    It begins with a 75
Been here too long as a cheerleader....ready to pass

I'd also suggest government jobs (local or state). They have many entry level positions (depending on your location tho) and they don't require work experience but they like to hire people with a bachelor degree even if a degree isn't required for the job and then you can move up from there.

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14

Guess at this point looking only for jobs that offer work exp under a CPA might not be the best strategy. Just find any job which is accounting related and after a year or so you can start looking for something more specific. Houston has an office for Board of Equalization and they hire tax auditors. That would be a great opportunity. Knowing sales tax laws is a huge plus.
